Won't stay logged in at work

Postby PKCSPT » Mon Mar 10, 2014 7:21 pm

When I am on the forum at home on my laptop I have no problem staying logged in to the forum.
I go to work with same laptop ( I work hotel audit overnight) and every time I click to reply or even go from one post to another it consistently logs me off. Sometimes I have to log in a couple of times in a row.
I don't know much about the internet there, we tell the guests to call Ovation. They blamed the forum here which I think is his way of saying he has no idea. Same lap top no problems at home, same laptop at work I have to log in after every post I read.

Anybody else have this problem and figure out why?

It could be something related to your company's Internet security system or maybe somebody is playing dumb when they really know.
Some companies lock or log people off/out of Internet sites that either might cause problems or might keep employees from their work.
It depends on the type of system you have. When I worked, all our PC's were routed through a larger PC system and were monitored.

Are you a member of any other forums? I'd try another forum and see what happens when you log in / read there.

I'm guessing that it has something to do with cookies and your work Internet. The key word there is guessing.

That is why I am confused. If I stand at the front desk work computer (we are not allowed to have chairs at the desk) I stay logged in. It is when I log in to the guest internet using my personal laptop that I keep getting logged out. Yet at home the same laptop I have no problems. Maybe the next time I work I will take it upstairs and try it from a different signal spot thingy.

The guest side of the system is probably set that way to help conserve bandwidth, discourage people from doing any more than the basics.

Make them rent movies not stream them for free on their own netflix, hulu or whatever account

Cookies only have authority or effect on how browser reacts to a website, has no effect on the internet transport system....

Would have a to consider that the "hotel guest" side of network has a "timeout" so if there is no activity for a given time (X number of seconds), it disconnects the link... Like somebody else mentioned, "bandwidth management"...

Because your laptop works from home, but not from work, suggests that it's not cookies.

My first guess is that you are using a proxy server at work, that is logging you out. I find it interesting that they don't just automatically block you at work, like they do where I work.

My second thought is that it's the ISP. I do know that some people that use sbcglobal have some serious issues with staying connected. Is your ISP different at work and at home?

I guess I'm glad that others are having the same exact trouble I have been experiencing only on this forum for many months now. I also get logged off when moving from discussion to discussion. I belong to 7 other trailer forums and a few firearms forums and never have this problem with any of them. Oh, a couple of them might log me off if I haven't visited their site for 3 or 4 days, but I expect that. Mike has attempted to help me with this problem and I have followed all his advice, but nothing has solved this problem. We have Wildblue.net (Satellite service) and use the latest version of Firefox on a HP 64 bit computer running Windows Vista. I put up with this inconsistency because of the terrific people and the quality of information found here at TnTTT!

Thank you Mike!

I get to bring my personal laptop in for now. Audit tends to get very quiet in the early morning hours and so far as long as I get my work done, don't be obvious with my laptop they let me bring it in. Since I log into the guest wifi they can't block or track me hehehehehe :D
I am thinking you are right about the automatic time out to limit people just using up bandwidth.

At least I have no problems at home

I would not be too sure about that...

I get periodically booted, too ... no rhyme nor reason that I can tell ... sometimes I can go a week without getting kicked off, then it's 2-3 times a day or more. As with others, this is the only forum that it happens with. Frustrating, to say the least ... but, there are far more important issues to deal with, so I try to not let it get my shorts in a knot ... kind of par for this particular course, IMHO .,, ,,,

You can be logged, audited, watched and limited the moment you go from totally autonomous to "plugged in" whether it be physical wire or WiFi or cellular....... If you don't want others to know anything don't "plug in"....
