TD window placement

Postby Socal Tom » Sun Mar 30, 2014 2:11 pm

This may have been covered before, but it recently occured to me that I should have placed the windows in my TD much lower in the door.
Most of us have roof vents, so hot air can get out. Some installed power vents to help pull that hot air out, but the cool air has to come in the window. Well my window is about 18 inches from the top of the TD. I sleep about 10 inches from the bottom, so any air that comes in doesnt create a breeze I could feel. If the window were lower in the door I would feel the breeze. Anyone else see it this way?

It might look a little funny, but it would be much more functional. Any other thoughts on this?

Tom,

Yes, I do as well.

On our first teardrop we placed a small window in the front, so the breeze would blow across us (no A/C in that trailer).

My windows are high-mounted also, and I do have powered vents to create an air exchange, but in Texas, the air thru the windows is most likely to be warm or hot during camping season. A/C and/or a higher powered circulating fan were always a "given" in my build. My windows are also not in the doors, for reasons I have stated in other threads, and high-mounted to a) avoid inadvertent contact while sleeping (a 4x8 is sorta tight), and b) provide some privacy with the shades drawn back and window opened (awning style, providing rain-shielding and a "distance barrier" to discourage close by, nose to the glass, snoopers). My wife wanted privacy, but with windows. I prefer a cave.... In a more friendly climate (weather and social), in another time, I would have the windows and doors opened wide for sleeping, but not here and not now.

my windows are set low in the door and are as large as I could fit to give me as much airflow as possible. sleeping on those perfect nights the air flows in and across me keeping it all comfortable. When I had an RV slider window I didn't get that kind of airflow as even fully open, the window was 2/3 blocked. The Wiley window made the difference, as the glass can come out completely.
look at many tears and wonder why the widows are so small, mine give me the idea of a screen door without any extra parts to get in the way. the bottom of the window is about 4" above the mattress.

My TD door mounted windows were above me a bit when laying in bed, however I had a Fantastic Fan, so with curtains a little longer than the window, the curtains acted like a wind deflector causing the airflow to go downward toward the bed. Never had a problem when it was "having the windows open season" in Florida. When it was hot the A/C was on. I had 15" X 18" awning windows I got from Grant at Lil Bear. With awning windows you get the full opening vs part opening with sliding windows.

My windows are about a foot above the mattress. Like Steve said, my curtains deflect the air flow drawn in by the powered vent down a little, but not so much that I feel a draft across my body. I have never felt "hot" in my camper, and I have never kept my power vent on for more than an hour at a time (I put it on a switch...always on or on a timer, see below). I do have fans above the pillows to circulate the air which helps cool me without bringing in outside air because sometimes I need a little "air" but the air out side is just to cold to feel comfortable.
