sidewalls higher that 4 ft?

Postby Barak » Tue Apr 01, 2014 8:02 pm

Hello,
I have a design that I am working on that includes a storage space in the front of the teardrop, sitting on the Vee part of the tongue closest to the main trailer frame. the storage space will be about 18-24 inches long, 5 ft wide (the width of the teardrop) but also needs to be 55 inches tall inside. This will house my powered paragliding motor that has a cage surrounding the propeller that has a diameter of 55 inches. The access door will swing open and be on the side. I'll use some sort of sliding rail to pull the thing out from the side. I'll post a sketch later. The total dimensions will be approximately 10X5 on a 4X8 HF frame.
So my question is, considering plywood sheets are 4X8 (and I intend to build a wood one) what would be the best way to achieve a 55 inch high sidewall that will still be strong. Build a frame with insulation and skin it with thin plywood on both sides? Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Barak

Here is a sketch of the front storage area. This needs to house the 55 inch tall paramotor.

This is the method I used to make 10' sides. It's basically a tongue-and-groove joint. It's tricky to do if you're working in a small space, but it works well.

Baltic birch plywood commonly comes in 5' x 5' sheets. Check for hardwood suppliers who may carry it.

Hey Barak, check out my build... I used 60" tall sides to build. I used 1/2" ply, and glued and clamped 1/4" to the inside to give it a finished look. FOr the joint, I routed a 1/8" groove in the ply, and installed a oak buicuit piece... glued together. Very happy with the outcome. V/R Brad

Using 1/2" ply on the outside, a 1" or so space for spacers and insulation, and 1/8" on the inside will give you a nice stiff wall. Compare that to a hollow core door with 1/8" masonite for skins. Couple that with the curved roof and the structure ought to be very rigid.

Lumber yards should be able to get you 1/2" X 5' X 9" plywood or maybe even bigger. Home Depot can special order stuff. A bit more pricey but doable.

Cheers,

Gus
