Shade Tent

Postby Dirtyfootcamper » Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:51 pm

Has anyone used one of these or anything similar for a side tent to their teardrop? I'm still contemplating what I want to do for a side/privacy tent. Any better ideas out there?

I went with a tent that is designed to work on a SUV.

I use something like that on the beach. However it is one that you throw on the ground and bingo it is up. Up is quick down takes a little practice but is also pretty quick. And mine is too small to put a trailer in. However, your sun shade shows a nice interior.

For the tear we had a screen tent (Walmart) with a zipper in the center of 1 side and a D door on the other and no floor. With tarps on the sides for privacy and weather proofing. This approach took too long to set up and was NOT weather proof.

Our solution was to sell the tear drop and get an Aliner. I think the tear drops are great for road tripping but not so great for park and stay scenarios. In any case the Aliner works great for us and the tear was a little restrictive for our style and my wifes bad back.

I like the looks of Little Guy's 5x7 mini screen room
It looks like it would be compatible with many RV doors.

I bought my 10 x 10 first up tent used in 08 it has 4 dozen outings under its belt. It has served as a living room ,a kitchen, a covered patio room and equiped with my little 4x4 pop up it becomes a room with a 1/2 bath :D

I'll be trying out my Paha Que 5x7 Screen Room this weekend. (The one that Little Guy sells.) You do need the attachment kit that allows you to cinch the "tunnel" tight around the door (see the photo). I think it will work great for a screen room, dressing room, night time potty room, even a sleeping room for my great nephews.

Like PKCSPT, we also went with an SUV tent for versatility. This one comes with a screen room and a shade.

I also have one of those and like it very much. Unfortunately it was too big to take when we had a teardrop and Toyota Matrix, 4 banger, TV (+ 3 people + 3 bikes). When we moved to the Aliner we started with a Toyota Venza, 6 cylinder with 3500 lb towing capacity and I have now included that shelter into my package plus I have a 10x13 awning and screen room preloaded on the Aliner. The trailer is UP and ready to sit and have a beer in a couple of mintues (even in the rain) and the side awning takes about 5 additional minutes when it is not raining too hard. Sometimes you just gotta wait and have a second cool one.

But I do like that first up shelter with the 1 piece frame and scissor stuff at the top. It is a little heavier than a regular tent but the stability and numerous hanger locations make it indispensible. It is hard to go wrong when there are only 3 pieces and one of them is the bag it goes in. Plus it is a great place to string LED Xmas lights.

I realize I kinda moved away from the Teardrop tradition, but it works for us. I never resolved the side tent issue for the teardrop.

Does the system work with 26x36" doors? Little Guy's store is not very clear about supporting campers other than their own.

Yes it will fit. It will just fit further down on each side than what mine does.

The moulding is 48" long and is rolled loosely in the box. You mark the middle of each piece, one on top of the door and one below the door. You heat up the rubber--I put them on the asphalt driveway for a while and used a hair dryer to get the curves out of it. Then you clean around the door with their alcohol wipes. Then match the center of the door with your mark, and start pressing it in place. I haven 't tried setting up the screen room since I applied the molding on Monday. I 'm camping this weekend so I'll have pics next week of it in place. Here's a picture of the entire door (excuse the reflection--I 'm building a drawer for the galley). There is a cord that cinches tight and goes in the groves of the molding.

I have used the cabanna in your picture at the beach, and they are very roomy. Thay many not be tall enough from ground up to cover your door unless your tear rides real low though.
Here are some pics that I took from the beach this past summer. Use the lawn chair to give an idea of height.

I set up my Paha Que 5'x7' Screen Room on my Little Guy Silver Shadow this weekend. I love it. It takes just a few minutes to set up, and luckily I bought a door mounting kit for both doors. The passenger side had a drop off from the asphalt to the ground, so it wouldn't work there. It worked perfectly on the driver's side door, on the asphalt. I was able to put two chairs in there with plenty of room. A small space heater kept it toasty in the cool air.

I like my instant side tents, (signature) they set up fast and provide stand up privacy. with them in place our private space is just about doubled.

Ok, my ears have perked up!!! Tell me, does the door to your teardrop stay opened or can you close it? If it can be closed at night and my wife can get from the td to the tent without going outside, I bet I could talk her into a 5x8!
