Big enough?

Postby BubbaJ » Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:03 am

Greetings all. My wife and I are planning to get a teardrop next spring. I want it to be as light as possible to tow behind my Subaru. Is a 4x8 big enough for two adults to be comfortable? I am looking at the retroride or tc teardrops.
Thanks Bubbaj

I think for two you would want a 5 wide. Not saying it can't be done in a 4 wide, but that extra foot means a lot when sleeping. :D ..Just my 2 cents worth..

Which Subaru & engine do you have?
The '12+ Impreza (non-WRX) has a 0lb tow rating, but all the others have 1500lb or higher ratings from what I remember.

I have the outback with the 4 cylinder engine. I think it's rated over 2000lbs but I just wanted to be on the lite side. The 5 footers aren't that much heavier so I'll probably go that route.

It really depends on how large, or small you are.
A full size bed is 54" wide. Some antique "3/4" beds are 48" wide.

I have and love my 4 wide, but if my husband ever wants to join me would want a 5 wide if possible. If I ever do get another teardrop I would have two doors, I think that would be the key in a 4 wide for two and just nice to have in any tear. Mine is a single door.

We have a vintage 4' wide with one door and the two of us sleep just fine in it, and we're in our 60's. But everyones needs are different.

Size required to be comfy varies from person to person. Personally we would not be happy campers with a 4 foot wide.

You could fix you a cardboard box that is 4' wide and both of you get in and take a nap and see how it sleeps.

To give some perspective, a full bed is 54x75 and a queen is 60x80", do you sleep on a full at home normally?
And, from what I've read in the build journals section, most people build their second trailer because the first one was too narrow. Just about anything else can be changed to make a trailer bigger, you can add a trolley top or extend forward/back a bit for a few extra inches if needed, but the width is pretty well set in stone.

In a teardrop when sleeping you can not fall off the bed so you can sleep on the edges of the bed.So a 4 foot bed is not as small as it first seems if you are willing to sleep next to the walls. And yes a 5 footer would be roomier.

Thanks to all. I will probably be getting the 5 wide. We both fit nicely on a 4x8 sheet of plywood but the extra room would be good.

Also keep in mind, that when you take a trip, alot of other stuff ends up being stored in the cabin. So that extra room is handy to have if you don't necessarily need it for sleeping.

My wife and i have also started down the Subaru / TD rabbit hole. We plan on a 5x8 lil'bear / Grumman that will be built by us over the summer. We are going as light as possible with e brakes on a custom trailer.
