He didn't need directions, he needed to read the signs.

It's amazing today how many people don't read traffic signs.

Wow! One thing I noticed... even though the winch did not do that much work in this particular job, always put a blanket, coat, towel, sleeping bag or something midway on the cable just in case it snaps, the heavier the better. Doing that helps absorbs inertia and will lessen the chance of the cable whipping around and cutting someone in half so to speak. And if nothing's available get everyone way clear of a loose cable path.
I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction, the world will have a generation of idiot's.

Wow is right!!  :?

While I agree on the winch "issue" I did wonder if that was one of the new ropes.. not a cable. That's what I have on my winch and it is much safer.

Obviously that guy did not know how to drive. If he would have swung the corner very wide, he could have made that turn easily. Instead, it looks like he just stayed in his lane.

It looks like the road through Custer State park in SD. I think it was called the Needles road.

Yes, but in the video they also stated that there were "No Trailer" signs posted that he ignored, and messed up the top of his RV in the tunnels before this turn.

So it was a bit more then not knowing how to drive. More a case of being an idiot.

This is also what can happen by explicitly following a GPS... It will take you on a route where you really do not want or can go.....

We have to rescue tourists from back roads around Yosemite National Park because they get into trouble explicitly following GPS.... And throw out common sense when road forward begins to look "questionable"...

when I heard the part about tearing up his roof in the tunnel, the first thing I thought of was https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... t+8+bridge check out the first one, a few campers end up with skylights instead of a/c units

I think my GPS has settings for car/truck/trailer so it won't send the user down a restricted road,

I thought the road might be in California since all the plates I could make out were California. When I was in South Dakota 3 years ago there was a tour bus on the Needles Highway that was backing up traffic at one of the tunnels. It looked like it only had a couple inches of clearance on each side. I also read about a trailer getting stuck in one of the tunnels. Don't know what the restrictions are for the road since that was in my pre-trailer days.

While true, there was never enough line out for there to be much elastic energy in the wire rope (assuming that';s what he had on) I worked with wire rope in logging for 30+ years. With a lot of line out there's a surprizing amount of recoil should the line part under great strain and I've seen inch and a quarter line part with hundreds of feet out and it's scary! With only 15 feet out howver there's virtually no recoil energy to absorb.

What a fool. First if she would have had a TD she could have made that road easy. Second, remember back when we had to rely on a thing called common sense? Way before cell phones and GPS. Third, I agree that the winch didn't seem too effective, but it's fun to play with your toys.
