options for exterior trim ?

Postby ckurgo » Sat May 10, 2014 9:21 am

Just wondering if there are other options for exterior trim for my TD. I 'm just getting started with my build and wondering if there are other options besides aluminum, priced the trim and it was more than I was hoping to spend. if so where to look ? I have done search after search and came up with nothing :(
We are doing a 4X8 probably using the benroy plans and tweaking it to suit, siding with painted frp Also has anyone ever tried or considered using cargo doors form a large trailer as tear doors ? Heading to camper salvage place next weekend to look at options windows doorhandles ect Trying to keep cost to a minimum
wish me luck !

Trim for metal skin is usually aluminum. It bends and molds to the curves. There are other choices for skin like marine paint, clear varnish for a woody, fiberglass, or maybe canvas and paint that don't need trim.

I got my specialty trim from Grant at little bear teardrop supply. The regular angle aluminum and aluminum siding, I got from a local steel supply.

I have seen RV cargo doors used, but they are usually a little short. (Not tall enough for me!) There are some good pre-made teardrop doors out there. They come highly recommended. Making your own doors can be a challenge... But no more that a galley hatch!

I ended up with aluminum skin and love it! It is a low maintenance finish that has a classic, timeless look.

Sure, skip the trim by fiberglassing your teardrop. Then paint or varnish the fiberglass to protect it from UV sun damage. I've estimated fiberglass weighs about 1/10th as much as an aluminum skin. So you save weight too.

raka.com is a lower cost supplier of epoxy and fiberglass cloth.

Frank Bear sells manufactured teardrop trailer doors teardroptrailerparts.com/Doors

Good luck what ever you do.

The aluminum trim I used on our camper was not that expensive. I did get it from a local RV store because I wanted it long enough to avoid seams.
