TD Sightings

Postby Nobody » Sat Aug 23, 2014 5:42 pm

Lenora & I just completed a trip to Pinedale, WY area to attend the 3rd Walk the Winds gathering, organized by Mike (slowcowboy), at New Fork Lake, WY. Had a great time & saw lots of recreation vehicles on the trip but only 2 teardrops other than those at the gathering. We left the gathering on Sunday, Aug 17th & drove up thru Grand Teton & Yelowstone NPs. While driving thru Yellowstone on the Grand Loop Drive, around 1-2pm near Bridge Bay Marina we saw parked, an apparently homebuilt, aluminum TD with West Virginia tags, TV was a bronze color, 4dr GMC 4dr, 4x4 p/u. No one was around so we weren't able to talk to them. Saw the same rig next day around noon at McDonalds in Cody, WY but still no one in attendance & they were gone when we came out of the store.

On Tuesday, Aug 19th about 10:40am while driving east on U.S. Hwy 20, approx 40mi west of Casper, WY at Hell's Half Acre overlook, we saw a silver color TD (homebuilt ??) with commercial, Little Guy type door(s)? being towed by a Grey w/white top Toyota FJ Cruiser. No pic & we didn't stop as it was too late to turn by the time we saw the rig.

Dunno if either is member/guest of tnttt. We were in our red 2008 Toyota Tacoma, 4dr, 4x4 p/u w/hi-rise camper shell, towing our aluminum TD with Arkansas tags on both...

I've only seen a TD once in a campground where I was camping. I know they're around, people tell me they've seen them but I just don't run into that many. This past month I was thrilled to see the Keystone Chapter of Tearjerkers camping in Western Pa. I think there were about ten units in the campground. That's the only time I've ever seen any in a campground I've been in. The park ranger was so excited to have the group in the campground that he allowed me to go cruising through the campground even although I had no intention of camping at that time. To date in the last couple years, I've only seen five or six heading down the road while I've been out and about.

Saw my first homebuilt in the wild on Saturday, a very rough looking tear in need of paint just outside moriah, NY. Since I had a stack of boats and an overload of camping gear aboard I didn't want to try turning around to get a picture.

I live in a hot-spot for people that are visiting Utah's National Parks and I generally spend most of my workday on the highways. Seeing several (4 - 5) a week during the peak season (mid-May thru Sep) is not at all unusual. I even have occasional off-season sightings as well (Dec, Jan, Feb.) Slow, being so close to Yellowstone, is probably seeing similar traffic to what I'm seeing (and delivering propane gets him on the highways to see them.) I really think that there are more teardroppers out there than many realize. I have to agree that the "tiny" trailers are really becomming popular with high gas prices and simpler more cost effective vacations are becomming the norm.

BTW ... several from the forum have been noticed and recognized as you travel through. Usually just as you go by and I haven't waved soon enough. I generally don't post sightings (even when recognized) both because they are fairly frequent, and I don't want to be the souce of information for opportunistic crime (sad world ain't it.)
