Anyone using a cot instead of a fixed bed?

Postby Gold5one » Sun Oct 12, 2014 11:54 am

I just ordered a Slumberjack Big XL cot on a 1/2 price sale from Sports Chalet for $57- free ship. My kids don't have a bed for me when I visit, so I figured this was a good deal. Now I am thinking why not use it in the camper I'm building this winter. Using a cot would give me an open floor when it's folded up, my ceiling will be about 62" high, if my numbers are right, so it has sit up room on the cot. Without a fixed bed, I could use my camper for a portable ham radio shack on Field Day- I would also have room for a nice fold up lounge chair inside if the weather is bad, set up a fold up table for computers and ham gear- then put it away at night when the cot is set up. Is this a viable plan- or am I missing something? I am traveling solo and the bed will run length wise in my camper.

My friends who camp with me use these cots and love them. They use a self inflating mattress pad for comfort. The good ones, like theirs, are very sturdy and a couple of people can sit on the sides without fear of tipping.

I watched the assembly video again and it looks like all I need is to detach the two end bars off of one end, fold it up and hang it on the wall with 3 hooks. I just need to allow for overhead storage for the pad and sleepsack. If I later decide that I don't like a cot, then plan B is still available= build a fixed bed with mattress.

I could not get the sound to work on this video, but I have a cot purchased last year very similar to yours. It worked very well for me at my hunt camp (make shift one using an outdoor canopy). I too used an inflatable air mattress and it worked very well for me.

I also draped an old heavy quilt over the sides to reduce the effect of cold air from under neath being an issue. Two sleeping bags, sweats, no heat and I was very comfortable at night. It got down to 25 degrees.

Seems like a cot might work for me. I'll be able to get my build finished faster, too.

Yeah, the thing about air mattresses is they can be very cold. As cold as the surrounding air. So, have a foam pad or blanket/quilt to put between your sleeping bag and the mattress.

That's a great price for that cot!

Instead of a cot maybe a zero g lounger you can sit and read then when you desire to sleep just lay back. And there would be room under to store stuff. Just a thought.

I've been wanting to check those out! The stores are closing some of that stuff out now in order to make room for fake Xmas trees and inflatable Xmas santas here in SW Florida.
