Awning Questions

Postby LandCommander » Thu Oct 23, 2014 2:41 pm

Hi all, I've been poking around searching through all the awning threads and I can't seem to find an answer to my question.
My 1964 TT came with a c channel for an awning. I definitely want to get an awning but I'm wondering if the channel size is universal?

Also, I'll be looking for the CHEAPEST awning available that will fit my trailer… I'm frugal not cheap. Or should I use some plasticized drop clothes I have and try to make one??

Thanks,
Eric

I have seen two different size channels, or awning rails listed. I may be selling our almost new 7' bag awning for $125

Thanks for the response Mary and Bob, I guess I'll have to do some more research. Any one know how to determine what size you have?
The overal diameter looks like 7/16" and the openeing looks like 3/16ths. The length is 10 feet

I recently installed a new awning rail so I went out and measured it. A 3/8" bolt will just slide in the end and the slot measures 13/64" which is just over 3/16. This is the size rail commonly used and readily available

First off, what is the mfg. name of your TT. For the most part, all awning rails installed by the trailer manufacture were the same and will handle any awning manufactured today.

Secondly: If it's the cheapest awning available that you want? May I suggest you run down to Harbor Freight and get one of those blue tarps, some rope and a couple of polls...? That will make for one cheap awning.

I'm guilty of folding the edge of a blue tarp over a 1/4" piece of rope and threading it through the awning rail ... tie the loose corners to a convenient tree or prop up with a piece of PVC pipe and stake down. It looks 110% redneck, but was functional and stuff that I already had.

hmmm maybe a brown tarp? I actually have a some sort of coated white drop cloth thing I could use.
So I would fold the material over a thin rope? Maybe I can find some bamboo to use as poles...

It's a 1964 aristocrat landcommander.
So it sounds like maybe its the "standard" size?

For years we used a couple 2 X 2 X 6' poles with a rod on the end to go through the awning eyelets. Recently I used electrical conduit with a dowel turned down to fit in the end and a nail in it. But I do have several "real" awning poles that are adjustable.

So what could I run through the rails that I can attach to fabric? Like a certain size nut? Some sort of button? There's probably something made just for it? Something you rivet or sew on?

The blue trarps have eyelets in all four corners. Tell you what. For $50.00 I'll send you an awning I have extra and is to big for my Burro. Then all you have to come up with is the polls and tie down rope.

Below is a pic showing the awning

Most outdoor stores sell aluminium adjustable poles pretty reasonably, I paid about 10 bucks each for mine

And if you want to make your own, here's the cord that slides into the channel on the trailer.
