Teardrop updating

Postby Greg Barrick » Mon Oct 27, 2014 11:38 am

Happy Monday everybody.
I just cleaned out my camper getting ready to store it for winter. Time to start figuring upgrades for next year and figured I'd ask a few "seasoned" teardroppers. I have built basicly a campster 12 in size, but it is much more like my old 4x8 for simplicity and weight. (and make the wife happy) I have a futon mounted crosswise at the rear, but leave it down as a full 56" wide bed about 95% of the time. I have two (2) cotton (?) filled futon mattresses on it with 1/8" paneling on top of slats which seems fairly comfortable. However, when I get up in the morning, my hips are killing me. Is this telling me I need a "real" mattress? A 5" camper mattress? a 6" or 8" real mattress? I'm not real interested in the memory foam.
I have a dropped floor between the bed and the "storage bench" across the front. (5'-3" tall cieling) Been thinking of a fairly small "counter" across from the door to store a portapotti in for wife and a counter top to fill with junk. (TV, flashlite, glasses, water bottle, etc. The dropped floor area is about 5'l x 6'-1/2'w. Think we'd still have enough room to move around and sit up to read and play cards if weather drove us in? We use bag chairs inside if weather is bad. Just hate being forced to lay on bed when inside.
Would love to hear other peoples thoughts and ideas.

There are exceptions, but you go to the memory foam and you will never go back.........just my 2 cents worth. :D

Count me as an exception, then. Memory foam is just about the worst nights' sleep I've had. Too hard when it is cold, too soft and hot when it's hot, lumpy every time I move, stinks to high heaven no matter what the weather. Glad you enjoy yours, though...

Back to the question, though -- yes, it sounds like you want a proper mattress. An innerspring mattress will better distribute your weight and save your hips. I also ache pretty badly if I sleep on a mattress that is too thin or too unsupportive. We recently upgraded our stock mattress to a higher-quality (non-memory)foam one, and it sleeps SO much better.

We put a queen sized, 8 inch thick, memory foam in our 5X10 for a little over $200. Walmart on line strikes again.

My old Hunter came from the factory with 4" of foam for a mattress. It wasn't all that hot. We replaced it with memory foam. My hips felt the floor all night. We ended up putting our old Thermorests under the memory foam it it was "okay."

In our new 'drop, we went with the Foam Factories best 5" foam and put a two-inch topper over it. It's wonderful. It is everybit as good as the bed in our home.

Like I said there are exceptions.... and my mother was one. I broke down about 10 years ago and ponied up $2500 for a king Temper-Pedic after about the third $1000 dollar mattress that neither the wife or I could sleep on.........been floating on a cloud dreaming ever since. I have since outfitted about everything I sleep on with memory foam. I have found that 8" thick is a minimum for good sleeping comfort, 10" is optimum. :goodnight:

Same here.

We have a custom made 8" mattress in our trailer, and it is as close as we can get to what we have at home without going to a 10 or 12 inch mattress.
The way I see it; if you want to play camping, sleep on the ground.
If you want to enjoy touring, make the trailer and yourself as comfortable as you can.

We put in a 5" standard foam mattress and found it to be too hard. Then we put a two inch memory foam topper on that and it's perfect for us. Nice and firm yet soft. We don't sink in like you might on memory foam alone.

We have a 4" or 5" (Sandi is not here to enhance my memory) Medium density Foam Mattress in Miss Piggy.
Found it to be a little to firm, but after adding a 1" or 2" (again , No Sandi) it is just wonderful.
Sandi almost prefers it to our expensive bed at home.
