How do you store your teardrop over the winter?

Postby Burro » Mon Nov 10, 2014 9:43 pm

I stored my teardrop for the first time last year outside over the winter.

I live in Iowa, where we get cold, snow, and wind. In the spring the teardrop had significant damage to the aluminum skin. The cover I used rubbed the aluminum in a number of spots, turning the aluminum skin black. It took 3 days of polishing to get it back.

How do others store your teardrop outside over the winter? I picked up a car cover that seems softer than the blue tarp I used last winter. The car cover is breathable.

If you have suggestions of what you have done or pictures I would appreciate it.

$3,000 building a ttt now I need a garage to store it!

This is what I have been doing with my time for the last two weeks. I'm in a race against winter to get the shingles on (and it looks like I'm losing). The better half has been asking for a garage for years but the real impetus was the need for a place to store the trailer. She gets a stall, the trailer gets a stall, and I'm still parking outside in the snow.

To be fair, my ttt is a woody so I really need to store it indoors.

Just park it outside.
Summer sun, and winter snow. Been over two years now with no problems. I don't use any cover with the wind we have here.

We are lucky enough to have weather that allows us to camp all year. Each season has it's own highlights.

Winter,what's that?

Postby noseoil » Tue Nov 11, 2014 7:31 am

Why are you guys worried about a little cold weather? That's the best time for camping here! Come down for a visit and enjoy some sunshine. Besides it's too hot to camp here in the summer. Tim, Tucson, Az.

That is today's project. I must move stuff out of the way so the Pointy Trailer can go inside. I have a large, uninsulated shop building that is tall enough so my trailer can be stored unfolded. Then I put a hanging thing of damp rid in it and another dehumidifier that can be reused, plus a small heater inside. The heater is only used when temps get below freezing.

My shop cat keeps the mice out.

We are not lucky enough to be in Arizona in the winter (maybe next year?), but I do have 15,000 square ft. of buildings. ;)
So Miss Piggy is put away in the barn with the leveling jacks run down to take weight off of the tires.
All food stuffs and bedding have been removed and moved indoors.
Just never got time to wash the bugs and mud off of her from Fall camping.

Inside a Harbor Freight porta garage: http://www.harborfreight.com/10-ft-x-17-ft-portable-garage-69039.html

I close up the teardrop vent and windows and put a pail of DampRid inside to keep any moisture from becoming mold. I also remove the battery and store it inside in my basement.

Winter? That doesn't (supposedly) start for another month. It's a sunny 16ºF out there right now. (and no, I'm not quite mentally ready for it) :?

I picked up that R-Pod cover for a $100 on Amazon. It was discounted since it was an unused return. It's made by Classic Accessories. I threw it over the teardrop, put some spring clamps on the side corners to pull it tight, marked the excess material, cut it down to fit and sewed it back together. Works great. Takes about five minutes to put on. CA calls the material PolyPro 3, it's breathable yet repels water. It doesn't appear that the sun does anything to it and last winter's wind left no chafe marks.

That snow's from last year. We got a skiff last night but the 60 Watt panel is keeping the battery alive and well.

I have a cover similar to the R-POD. Have you used it in previous years? Did it scratch the aluminum at all? I hate to spend more time in the spring polishing again.

I usually store it in the garage, but I need the space for projects and our cars.

Thanks for the pictures I appreciate it :)

My cover spent last winter on my teardrop. I could see no marks left by it.
