Teardrop Snowbirds

Postby Vedette » Tue Nov 11, 2014 11:29 am

Well, yesterday I woke up thinking about the cold front that was scheduled to arrive, and all of my Canadian friends that left last week for the warm of the south (Arizona and Mexico)
This is a Canadian tradition! With those who participate in this tradition being known as "Snowbirds"
So that got me to wondering if there are any "Teardrop Snowbirds"?
And if not.......Why Not?
This got me to thinking (I think too much sometimes! ). That maybe it would be fun to organize a group of TDers to head south next winter and camp with those here on the Forum from Arizona, that are always bragging that their camp season never ends!!!
Who is in for winter 2015 - 2016?

Hey, Brian!

We know a few folks who snowbird in their teardrops ... and that's our plan when we get the TugDrop done (yes, we are back to work on it ... ...!).

We've gone to the AZ Roundup's Buckskin Gathering first week of December the last two years ... great time! That AZ bunch has a lot of events going all winter long (which I think is their REAL camping season!), so anyone who would be looking for gathering action while snowbirding wouldn't have a problem, there.

We won't be going this year, though ... I need to stay close to my 92-year-old father 'til a few things can be arranged. And, for us anyway, Winter 2015/16 is too far away to plan. If the TugDrop is done, though, ya just never know ... ...!

Have fun, and as always ...

We are slowly working towards this goal. We will be taking our new "teardrop" from southern California to Louisiana on a five month trip hopefully in 2 years. :worship:

Grant, when are you going to post some pictures of your new build. Don't see much of your stuff since your site went down.

We own a teardrop and we are snowbirds that live in upstate NY in the summer months. However we don't take the teardrop south for the winter. Last two winters we took our CT13 Uhaul fiberglass camper south, this year we went a little bigger to a Casita 17' camper. There have been a few teardrops in the campground we stay at on the coast of GA but they were there for only a short time. For the longer term camping we need more room and comfort than the teardrop provides so it only gets used in the summer months.

Oh, Damn, that's right ...

... I forgot that when I shut down the Teardrop Talk Forum that all my pics of the TugDrop went with it ... :FNP ...! There's a few pics in an album for it on the teardrops.net Facebook Page at http://www.facebook.com/teardrops.net ... they show the latest mock-up for the side walls to get an idea of the overall size we're working with and to help plan where various components will go ... if I can remember (and find the time), I'll post an update to the build thread I started here so many years ago ... ;) ...!

Thanks for the reminder!

Grant, sorry to hear that your father is getting near his time. Enjoy this time you have with him as it is far more important to both of you than any travel plans.

On the topic of snowbirding; I wonder if there is an opposite of that term? Mo and I look forward to my retirement that will hit in April of 2016 as we plan to head north as soon as weather allows. The longest we have spent in the TD is three weeks and we loved every day of that time. We hope to do a two month trip after retirement. We not only have the TD, but we have a 4X4 with back country trailer and we have motorcycles that we will be travelling on, so we will be gone a lot but will always return home to get caught up and plan the next trip.

Really, all our travel vehicles are fairly small and versatile and we have from Mexico to Canada to see. So what would you call a reverse snow bird?

Mikey
I know we missed you when we were in Kingman in 2013 (did try....but didn't have your address), but we would really love to have you come our way and stay at the "Farm" when you plan your trip North.

SUNBIRDS, Yeah, that's the ticket. So we are sunbirds and I believe that there are more of us out there, eh?

Brian, I believe that we will just take you up on your invite, thank you. I actually lived in Victoria but it was so many years ago that I remember very little(heck, I am getting so old that I remember very little that happened yesterday) On that two month trip, we will have our bikes with us and hope to do a lot of riding and I would like to travel a bit of the island and the mainland. We have also done a bit of reading about the Selkirk loop that goes up through Idaho and into BC. We are probably going to find that we can't get it all done in a two month period but we can always go back.

So tell me more about this Crawl you have going. Is it in your Tearjerkers BC/NW section? I really like the idea of doing a crawl and want to do one. I hope yours works well and then we can possibly come and do one with you later.

Hi Mike
Great to hear!
So I have so much I want to tell you, and I did consider doing this by PM, but this was my thread so what the heck.
You guys were so helpful to us when I asked what we should see in 2013 when we traveled Utah, Colorado, and Arizona, I would like to share our knowledge of the area with you.
Two months is a long time , but you are right..... there is so much to see here in the PNW.
And there are some great "Camping Loops" and "Motorcycle Loops" that you can take so that you never have to travel the same roads twice.
We have travelled extensively here in the North West, and would love to assist in any way with the planning of your routes.
Once again.....There is lots to see!!!!
Where we live in B.C. is in the heart of the Okanagan Valley...... which is a world famous tourist destination.
We are know as the "4 Seasons Playground"
Although we have not camped or travelled within B.C. (Did it all a long time ago) we have travelled extensively in Washington, Idaho, & Oregon........Again lots of great places and hidden treasures to visit.
So tell us what you like to do, the kind of campgrounds you prefer, any specific places you really have on your bucket list, and the time of year you are thinking of doing this?? We will give you our insight, ratings or suggestions.
Now about our Crawl? It is scheduled for Sept. 11-20th 2015.
September is a great month to travel in the NW as it is not so hot, the kids are back in school, and there is plenty of camping space at most campgrounds.
The idea of a crawl over Hwy. 20 was born from our first ever encounter with Teardrop Campers, when we ran into Karl and his Tear Jerkers group on a Crawl across the UP of Michigan. We had so much fun with them on the "One" night we were able to join them, and I liked the concept so much  .....that I have spent he last two years trying to promote a similar event here in the PNW. With the help of some new TD friends we are going ahead with it. A group 3 TDers (from B.C. Washington, & Montana) did a trial run checking out campgrounds and attractions one weekend this past Sept.
Can hardly wait for 2015.
Please keep in touch.

Brien, when you say -10, you are talking "centigrade" aren't you? ( about 15 to 20 degrees in south of the border talk) It's been in the high 20'slow 30's here in nite time temps and we have been missed by the high winds that have been hitting my sister's place close to Mt. Rainer (Enumclaw, wash.) Take care. T.Hoefer

I just can't see myself doing extended snowbird camping in something as small as a mad dash teardrop. 3 months in a what?

To me, this makes more sense if I'm going to be out for 3 months... The key to making this work is the full time table, and the porta potty in there.
