El Mirage Trip

Postby Redneck Teepee » Tue Nov 11, 2014 12:38 pm

Had a great trip to the speed trials at El Mirage Dry Lake in southern Ca. this weekend, it was perfect weather (high of 78) with lot's of dust generated by the cars. Spent two perfect sleeping nights in the tear where the temp dropped to about 37 degrees overnite.

Met up with 2 of my cousins who live in Palmdale/Lancaster and spent a lot of time just catching up. Took a few photo's and attached a few from the different classes for those interested...........Larry...Redneck Teepee.

The Rat Rod is one of many used for taxi's as the whole course is over a mile long.

Very cool, Larry ... ...!

I've never been to El Mirage, though I've been wanting to go for a long time ... I did get to go to the Muroc Reunion in 1999, and what a great! time that was! As some of the folks here know, I've had Salt Fever all my life and go to Speed Week and World Finals out on the Bonneville Salt Flats every chance I get ... I love the old-school roadsters, belly tanks, rear-engined roadsters, and the super-fast streamliners (300mph and better or I'm not interested ;) ) ... my father & I started a rear-engined roadster a while back, but due to his failing health, we had to turn the project over to our other "partners" to finish ... it's supposed to be done to run in next year's meets, and I'm supposed to be the driver, but we'll just have to see how much progress they make (it takes a long time to make it right to go really really fast ... :o ...!).

Glad to see you finally made it to the 'lakes ... it's in you, now, and it'll never leave ... ...!

Thanks Grant, yes it's a fever for sure. This is straight off of the S.C.T.A website:

125 entries-88 cars-37 bikes

14 records set-12 cars-2 bikes

Fastest time of the event was a bike at 245.316 mph and the fastest car was 244.484 mph.

Can't wait for next year at both Bonneville and El Mirage

Bonneville, mirage is on my bucklistfor sure. I live in Texas and preparing to retire in a couple years. I am jealous of the ones who get to go. I am finishing up on a 59 buick 2 dr hrdtop 425 turbo 400 to pull my 55 Benroy that I am in the middle of rebuilding. This is my third teardrop and looking forward to using it at the salt. Nice pictures.

Are you sure that 425 will pull that Benroy?

There are a lot of tears pulled with old classic's including mine, although I did leave it at home this trip. "Get er Done" and post some pic's so we can be jealous.

The Buick just came home from paint shop I used to paint it in last sunday. It's a 60's style mild custom. Now the chore of putting all the windows back in and trim on then once I heal up from painting it ,it'll get a new interior. It's a nice ride. I also have a 28 ford ,chopped, closed cab, fenderless truck with a 425 2x4 motor I'm building. It's a long way from being road ready. I am finishing up on the Benroy soon I hope. I bought it in sad shape this summer and doing a rebuild. It was in worse shape than I thought but it will be a nice camper when done. Post pictures, Hah! I'll have to wait until kids come by. I am computer challenged! My teardrop is not a restoration, just a rebuild. I went about it wrong but will do a restoration once I retire. Just trying to get it where I can use this coming spring. Takes me a long time to get a project done. I work 6-7 days a week and jobs are always away from home. I am a const. mngr. for Chevron Pipeline and follow the work all over U.S. I was blessed to be 2.5 hours from home the last 6-7 months. Still only came home on weekends when we didn't work.I'm excited to get all done so I can go to the SALT. I want to build a rack for the top. You have any pictures of the one on your trailer?

Sure do T.D. check it out. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=60566 I purchased a ready made rack, then modified it as to be able to open my top vent. The perforated metal I used to allow air circulation without unloading the rack was put to the test at El Mirage this last weekend, and worked perfectly I might add.

You sound like me before I retired, never enough time in a day, and once you do retire there "STILL" won't be enough time in a day.

On your computer in the upper left corner (while viewing this post) under my screen name "Redneck Teepee" click on that little blue camera image (lower right) for personal albums, and it will bring up more pics for viewing such as my 49 Chevy PU tow vehicle and Rat Rod. All projects that took time when I could salvage a little from the work schedule, kept me out of the bar and out of jail so to speak.

Probably not enough of us check the Personal Albums of others here on the Forum
When you see the number beside images in ones signature you start to realize how many pictures there really are to view.
Miss Piggy's entire build is in mine! But I hardly posted any pictures in my build journal.
Love to see your 59 Buick as we are just at the paint stage of Sandi's 61 Studebaker Hawk (mild custom)which will be the TV for Miss Piggy in the future.
