Rain forcast question

Postby notned » Wed Nov 26, 2014 11:35 am

Hello, planning a visit to see family. We reserved a campsite with water, electric and showers. Rain is forecast (90%) Considering canceling and getting a room. Two nights, the budget would go from $35/night to $70 per night. The city is 4 1/2 hours away. Your input? Thanks.

What kind of rain? Mere drizzle? A downpour? Intermittant showers, fog and light drizzle?

Rohnert Park, so heavier than we're used to in the Central Valley. But it is California...

"I" have actually, perposely chosen to go camping "in the rain". After all, camping is: out in the elements, rain or shine...So, yer question can only be answered by...YOU. If I have a hankerin to go campin, the weather is jus part of the experience. Kinda like "real life"...ya take the bitter with the sweet or ya jus take the road "most" traveled jus like everone else. Then, I consider myself to be "different" from all the rest so campin in the rain is jus campin !

As long as tornados, incoming ICBMs or nuclear fallout isn't in the forecast, (I'm exmilitary, so I think that way) :R ---we go camping, rain or not. We set up our two 10 x 10 canopies, have 4 sidewalls to shield out rain or wind and bring things to do if it does rain. Besides, I'd rather spend a rainy camp day, playing cards, reading or whatever, than enduring 8 hours of standing on concrete, surrounded by the sights, smells and drama of "big box" retail. On rainy days we'll drive the nearby backroads in search of interesting buildings, old signage, architecture, shops, etc.

Bob, Belle and Watson with our comfy campsite.

I don't mind rain so much now that we have a CTC. I absolutely hate tenting in the rain though. So depends what the camping accommodations are.

If I have a trailering trip planned, I go rain or shine. Last year's (2012) Tour of the Great Northwet was 21 nights long with 8 days or nights of rain. This year's tour of British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies was 30 nights long with 11 days/nights of rain. Eight of those days and nights were continuous.

It rains, get used to it. Don't let a bit of water stop your trip.

Up here, in Northern California and in the Bay area, the weatherman is saying that rain will be coming in sometime on Friday and will be heavy at times on Sat/Sun/Mon, possibly continuing a little into Tuesday and even maybe Wednesday. We usually get a big storm right around Thanksgiving. I think this may be it. Since it is coming in sort of from the south then heading east, it might be considered a "Pineapple Express" (usually a lot of rain). :rainy: (We really need this!) Of course, you're talking about Central California, which is a little bit farther south. Things might be milder there. Have you checked the weather channel on TV, where they forecast the weather for the entire nation?

You are concerned enough about the rain to post here...that says get the room right off.

The total difference is only $70 for the two days, perhaps even less if breakfast is part of the motel room.
You will also save a bit on fuel, if not pulling a trailer.
At 300 miles or so one way, if you save 5 gallons of fuel each way, @ $3.00 a gallon you have saved $30.
So, $30 +breakfast for two days at $5 per person x 2 =$20 comes to $50 savings.
$50 from $70 means it will cost you an extra $20 for two nights to stay in the motel.

If you can't afford another $20 for the trip so you can be comfortable, then maybe you can't afford to go on the trip?

Camping is/can be fun for the sake of camping, but if you are camping to save money on a room, and is rains, what fun is that?

I vote get a room. :)

If you are worried about getting wet do not camp.... Rent a room..... IF water does not bother and you can deal with it go for it... Really its only a decision you can make about your own comfort...
