Receiver Lock Keyed to Ignition Key

Postby bdosborn » Sun Dec 21, 2014 7:39 pm

I went to put my teardrop receiver cover on the new pickup and my receiver lock was too short to fit through the receiver. Time to buy a new one I guess, besides mag chloride had taken its toll on the old one. I've been lurking over at the Tacoma forum and found this on Amazon from a company called: Strattec

The Receiver Lock opens using your vehicle’s ignition key rather than requiring you to carry any extra keys. I've got one ordered so hopefully it works well. It would be nice to have one less key to keep track of.

Bruce, this is timely for me, having lost my received lock keys recently.
I went to the web site to see how it programs and found this:
http://www.boltlock.com/how-it-works/

If you like it, please report back on it. I will order one. I for one am always losing my keys, but at least I have held on to my truck keys.

We would need to have a dirt cover on it to key the key way clear.

Good find!

They've got a 2" long padlock that works the same way with your ignition key.

I just asked eTrailer if that lock would work on an Atwood A-frame coupler.

They have a trailer coupler pin lock as well. I'm not too crazy about the design (looks like you could cut it off pretty easily) so I thought I'd wait to see how well I liked the receiver lock before I committed to another of their products.

I noticed the awkwardness of the coupler lock.
I found my keys to my hitch lock, so the urgency to replace it is gone, but I still like the concept and still look forward to your report on the hitch lock.

The pins that Bruce found are 1/2" or 5/8". I believe mine is 5/8" but I would need to double check it.

I asked eTrailer if Bolt's padlock would work on my Atwood hitch and the answer was no. They suggested Bolt's Trailer Coupler lock here:
http://www.etrailer.com/p-BL7025289.html It'll still work with my ignition key.

I got the new lock and it's pretty much as described; insert your key and turn it 3/4s of the way around. Like any new lock it's a little hitchy but it seems well made. The only thing i don't like is how long it is. It sticks out so far I think you could cut off the bent portion easily. The lock portion is a lot bigger than my old one as well. I guess it has to accept a full size key instead of a little bitty one.

Time to freshen up the teardrop receiver cover, it's been 5 years or so and the mag chloride is starting to show. BUT, it doesn't show a thing from when I backed into a car and left a teardrop size hole in the front grill. That was an expensive Christmas... :frightened:
Bruce
P.S. This is the 5/8" model. YMMV...

Thanks for the report on the Boltlock. In a way, I am sorry I found my keys. Then I could have ordered one like yours. But to save $$$ now, I will wait.

What keeps another truck owner, with the same model, from opening the lock?
