Biggest cooler you can fit in the generic benroy?

Postby booyah » Fri Jan 16, 2015 11:09 pm

So, I really like the kenskill and grumman profiles, but I REALLY like how detailed the plans are for the generic benroy. Quick question, whats the largest cooler you can fit in the galley of a generic 5x8 benroy after an insulated roof, the hatch, and a queen bed in the cabin? Looking to fit something like the Coleman xtreme 5 day in the 70 liter if possible, if not maybe the 50?

Thanks!
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Some questions you can answer yourself if you just think about it a little. You do know how to do that, don't you?

Welcome to the Forum.
Well I agree with Gage in part.
Depending on where you place your priorities???? You can have "Any" size cooler you think you need.
Heck, if you need to take that much beer camping, you can sleep out under the stars and make the entire TD a cooler.
Good Luck with your build........and don't mind us! There is some serious information here on the Forum that will assist you with your build.

If need be mate you could have a split bench hight to acomodation a taller fridge/cooler .
Anything is possible ... Might even be better to run 2 as I've found in the past foods best not kept with beer because I'm always in the beer fridge and it melts the foods ice

We run two! and on occasion we have taken three. :R
Yes, I too have the same problem........and because I like ice in my beer when it is really hot out. I hate it if the ice tastes like produce. Cheese gets yucky when on ice or in ice water, and watermelon takes up way too much beer space???

Well Doug, all I can say is I at least showed him a picture of what I put in a smaller teardrop than what he's thinking of. I have no idea of how large a Coleman xtreme 5 day, 70 liter cooler is and apparently you don't either.
And as far as your uncalled for remark I've probably forgotten more than you could ever think or wish you knew about building or restoring a teardrop trailer.

PS: There is nothing wrong with the generic benroy plans. Just modify them to show the kenskill or grumman profile. It's just a mater of thinking things out.

I checked out google and found this site:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-70-Qu ... er/4807332

Dimensions are: Coleman cooler measures: 18-1/4" x 31-1/2" x 16"

Hope this helps

First off booyah, I see you are new so I want to welcome you. Sorry that you got to meet our resident curmudgeon. Most here are friendly and willing to help, no mater what the question is. If you are trying to make a plan fit your personal style then you are right in thinking it through first. I travel with 2 coolers. One in the trailer and a second smaller one for drinks. That goes with me on day trips and stays in the tow vehicle.

I start buy doing a layout of the main things I want in the galley. For me, that was the cooler, stove, battery and water bottle. I want to be able to roll the cooler out out and still get the lid open. A small drawer for cooking utensils and later some shelving for dry goods and cookware.

Here is where I started...

Here is what I ended up with....

WoodButcher:

Nice galley. Not to hijack this thread, but what's that chrome knob-looking thing to the left of your license plate?

(The little smart-ass sitting on my shoulder wanted me to ask what the red thing on your green cook stove was but I told him to knock it off. I grew up filling those antique Colemans and chose to move to propane –but I'm aware of the cult-like following!)

Booyah:

I think you are on the right track as far as planning your galley. Like Woodbutcher, I believe in designing the galley around the target cooler (and also a water jug).

You'll note in the first part of the Generic Benroy plan, it says you can stretch it to 9' or 10'. Stretching of course adds labor and costs but adding another foot of length in a teardrop really adds space almost exponentially. If you choose to consider this, take a look at the thread on stretching plywood.

After this photo was taken, I added a storage slot behind the cooler for paper plates and behind the 7-gallon water jug for two extra propane cylinders.

Enjoy your build.

Tony, the silver thing is the license plate light. As for the old Coleman. I started with propane and went back to the old standby. The fuel lasts longer, burns hotter and I don't have to carry extra bottles. I saved the propane stoves if I ever want to go back.

booyah....to add to what Tony said, if you build longer, you mat be able to turn the cooler the other way and roll it out. This gives you more width in the galley. You might spend some time looking at what others have done in their galleys. There is a galley page somewhere with lots of options. Maybe someone smarter then me can tell you where it is.

Well gentlemen, one thing I don’t do is trash other members or their trailers. Only fools that think they know everything does that. :o
With that being said, I'm out of here.
