Dual Fantastic Fans?

Postby Pete T » Tue Jan 20, 2015 7:43 am

Howdy,

I'm in the very early stages of planning what I want in my teardrop. I've pulled the trigger and ordered
the Ironton Heavy-Duty Trailer Kit — 5Ft. x 8Ft., 5.30-12in. Tires from Northerntool.com. Me and my Dad
are going to build the teardrop.

So, I've read a lot on here about what folks have done and the subject of air conditioning seems to be a
popular topic. Don't get me wrong, I like AC like the next person and I know that it has its plusses and
minuses when building a teardrop. Seeing that this is my first build I'm trying to keep it as simple as
possible and easy to maintain. It seems to me that AC is a lot of work.

I'm sold on the Fantastic Fans. I know that I'm definitely going to have one on board. My questions is,
seeing that I'm leaning away from AC does it make sense to install a second Fantastic Fan or will one be
enough for the trailer I intend to build? Has anyone else tried dual Fantastic Fans?

Thanks,

RePete

It sounds like an interesting idea, one push & one pull would be good for airflow. That being said, we live in the desert & 100+ degrees is normal for our area. I don't care how much you move the air, at 100 degrees you would end up being dehydrated faster than usual with 2 fans blowing. That's why AC is a good option here. If we were farther north, it wouldn't be an issue for us.

The time you spend planning is more important than the time you spend building.........

My 8 x 20 tiny house is a bit bigger than a teardrop trailer but I installed fans at each end of the tiny house. One is intake blowing inward and one is exhaust. To take advantage of cool night air I can run both and exchange the cooler night for the warm stale air. I can choose to exhaust only, the warm air and even cooking smells. I can intake only if its warm and sunny outside after a very cool night to warm the home quickly. I see a definite advantage to a similar setup.

I have the FF with reverse directions in my 4'x6' trailer. I only ever run it blowing the air out the top. After living in the trailer for six months last year (Jan-June) my impression is if you have windows you can open on both sides of the trailer one fan is probably going to be sufficient. The draft my FF makes on the first and second settings is significant. If you won't be able to open the windows, or they're too small to create a significant draft, then two fans sound like a good idea.

You probably do not need two fans, check out what the CFM of what fan is, then compute what cubic feet interior of trailer is, if you are exchanging the total volume of air every few minutes with one fan, the second fan is not going to be a whole lot of help but you just might create a noisy hurricane of air movement (moving air is noisy) , BUT remember for ever cu-ft of air fan removes you need replacement air, as mentioned above, you have to open a window or two to pull in fresh air...

I have a 2000 sq-ft house and in summer day time temps in my area can reach 100°f. and interior temps can rise to 85-90 by evening inside (if I do not run AC), and I can open sliding glass door on one end of house and put 20 inch box fan in window at other end of house and evacuate heat during nigh cool hours and house will be down to 68-70° by morning when I close up house to prevent heat intrusion.... Fan size and air flow calculations is all about what you are trying to do..... Not necessarily the arbitrary idea of "I decided I need two fans"...

Actual cooling is how much moisture you can evaporate into air and off your skin ( no AC here) and not necessarily how many fans you have...

How ever you might just make provisions for second fan so IF you decide you need one, you can just make cut out and install later...
