Towing Mod

Postby Socal Tom » Sun Jan 25, 2015 8:24 am

My TV is a Jeep Wrangle unlimited (JKU). I discovered recently that mopar makes a kit to install a 7 wire plug ( includes charge power for battery and provision for brake controller) . I got it for about $80 on eBay and it took less than an hour to install. It took me longer than that to convert the trailer to the 7 wire plug.

Cool.... I never looked into if a factory harness was available.... I did my own for cost of 7 pin RV style receptacle... Even wired in a relay so it disconnects 12 power to rear when ignition is off...

That's the one downside, the power comes off of the battery, but I might make that relay modification in the future.

I use a relay on the trailer ,switch-powered by the tail light circuit.
When the driving or headlights are on it is connected.
Just a different way to do it.

We put on one of those plug & play factory type harnesses on Sandi's Hyundai Santa Fe.
After watching the video, and having the local auto parts store deliver it. the installation took less than half an hour.
As I recall my cost (Jobber Wholesale) was just over $38.00.
Works GREAT!

My relay is under under hood near battery connection with 30 amp fuse and I snuck a wire into passenger compartment and tapped into same hot wire (ignition on) that powers accessory socket (cigarette lighter) to operate relay...

Actually been thinking of doing same thing to my always on 12 volt supply in my Chevy pickup...
