Sway

Postby mrwall1 » Fri Mar 20, 2015 8:43 pm

We went on a couple of couple hour trips last year even down I-5 and never noticed any sway but today we took off from western Washington over to Yakima valley and if we crept above 60 the trailer really started swaying... The only thing different we did was switched our hitch with the ball a little higher so trailer rides more level... Any ideas I switched back the hitch lower for the drive home Monday.....

By moving the hitch up ,You are also moving weight to the back. I think if you move some weight to the front of the trailer or remove weight from the galley. Will help with the swaying.

KennethW is on track. What is the percentage of total weight on the hitch ball? You need more weight on the tongue/ball.

I have to agree with the other posts..

Towed my landscaping trailer with 4' sides out to Indiana (640 miles) with absolutely no sway and at capacity. On the way home it was empty and the sway was noticeable all the way back over 60 mph.

Low tongue weight causes trailer sway.

My Deep cycle battery is bad, so I took it out and put my car jump starter in its place in the tongue box, so the actual tongue weight was only 90 pounds.... So on the way back, I switched the hitch back to lower.... put the 24 bottles of wine the wife bought to the front wall in the trailer... and a few other heavier items forward.... the trailer only swayed a couple of times on the way back... but seemed like windy areas...
thanks for all the help!
