No! idea where to post this ...................

Postby J.T. » Wed Apr 01, 2015 7:52 am

Not being a " computer type" person or a teardrop builder ( I've seen what some folks have built and mine........ is no where near the quality ) but it works lol.
Two things on my mind today, (1) Is it feasible or possibly a good idea to post the towns or cities where each teardroper is located? I'm located in the South Central area outside of Dayton Tx. and was wondering if there is anyone near me.
(2) I'm needing to re-roof the front and top of my woody because the luan is cracking and pooching( ?) up and I need to redo it before heading up to Boise Idaho next month. I know I can get luan from the big box store but is there another place around Houston that has better plywood for the project ?
Any and all help would be greatly apreciated . JT

Do yourself a favor and at least consider FRP panel. No rust, no corrosion, no warping, and no hail dents.

On my woody; got 1/8 birch 5x5 and it bent much easier and so far has stayed in perfect shape. now, :? , I first found it at a wholesale, or contractors type lumber store. (Of course they could not sell to an individual) found a guy, at a big box store, through a contractor I know, who would order it from the "wholesale" store for me. I paid the b.b. store, very modest mark up, and went to the wholesale store and picked it up myself. Other people on here have had a easier time, but, the first line covered it. The birch, looked nice, bent much easier, finished well and has worked like I wanted. I "tried " a piece of luan, it was barely making the bend, trying to split, gave up. Coyote

I'm with Bob on the FRP-- Lowes recently closed out some FRP for less than $10/sheet. You can find deals- maybe a salvage sheet with a busted corner, that the store manager will mark down 50% or more.
(Bob, if I ever come across another small $40 HF craigslist trailer deal, I will be tempted to build a mini-teardrop on it like yours)

Thanks for the reply on the birch. As to the frp, I've never worked with it so I don't know if I'd be confident enough to try it but then again.who knows.
Before my brother passed away he brought down a pop-up camper a girl gave him. It was her boy friends and he left it in her yard, she got tired of it being there and told him she was giving it away if he didn't move it, he said go ahead and she gave it to my brother. He put new tires on it , brought it to me and we stripped it down in one day. Got alot of good stuff out of it too like camping gear and such. Anyway I had a great and glorious idea of building a 5x10 on the frame with his help. Like they say " the best layed plans of mice and men......"
Guess I'll look around to find some birch and see what happens or maybe the frp. Momma likes the woody look though so.......... still wondering if anyone knows of a good place to buy around Houston.
Thanks JT

I'm building a woodie, but the absolute "roof", meaning the most top part between the curves, will have 1/8 luan covered by 60 mil white EPDM, 10' long. Front and rear sections will have vertical cedar strips and aluminum rock guards. I've used epdm in my house and the stuff is very, very tough, easy to install and easier to repair. Price isn't too bad.

To my style and "cool" matters (for whatever my style worth anyway LOL) so I understand the woody look, mine was a woody as well but had an aluminum roof, you can source aluminum sheets easily and it still gives a vintage or retro look if that is what you are after and it goes well with wood sides. I did use 1/8" birch for my interior which worked great where luan would have split. I am in the Dallas area but did alot of searching and found a high quality plywood company who had it. They even has 3/4" 4x10 sheets for my walls so I didn't need to do any joints and had a continuous grain pattern all the way back. I hope that helps!

JT , you can sand the roof down then cover it with a nice canvas skin glued on (and painted)... That will protect it from further "cracking and pooching( ?) up” .. Easy fix, cheap ...And it Works !!!
More help is available in the Foamie section ... (below)
