It's spinning but not moving? If So, pry it up while turning anticlockwise, should be able to get it out. The usual door handle insides that have the threaded part inside, are some type of cheap cast metal that carves up easily. You can try retapping it, but there might not be enough metal to put a thread in any more.
A way to avoid this is to tighten each side down a little at a time, because if one side is tight, it could pull the other side out of line and then you just carve it up trying to get it threaded.
If you're determined to save the part, well I'd probably fill it up with JB Weld, drill and retap, or if I could find a matching machine screw the next size up,
and there was enough metal in the pillars in there, redrill and tap for that.
