New AC option?

Postby Socal Tom » Sat Apr 18, 2015 9:53 pm

It looks like it's just in the UK at this point, but I could see this as a viable option for,the U.S. .

It's a mini split A/C, just like you can buy for a home or business. But tailored for a small RV. Perfect! They are wonderfully efficient as well.

It's only listed at 2500 btu. Which is about what a TD should need, however some folks have said the pet cool at that size didn't have enough cooling for them. The design of this unit provides so many options, for perms at or temporary mount.

I too am very interested in these. Right now, they are Europe only. Guess I'll stick with my modified window unit for another year.

I ran our 2500 BTU pet cool one a 90+F day with the tear in partial shade and with no one inside could not get the cabin below 78F.
The split system looks interesting but what does it do for condensate? I know there is quite a bit from our system. Just out of curiosity what is the cost?

"The umbilical cord between the two units contains 3 lines for refrigerant, two 230v flexible cables and a discharge tube for condensate. "

I get the AC unit but not the way it's installed in their photos. Perhaps it's a regional thing but I'd never just leave my window open the way they have it. It would just let in more heat & humidity, not to mention a campground's worth of mosquitoes. It would be workable in a TD if you ensured you had a place to mount the window unit section directly above the indoor section. Seems quite doable in a custom build could be tricky retrofitting to some TDs unless you're willing to give up use of one door during the hot months.

We have so much heat & humidity that I'd rather just have an AC mounted full time. For those in other climates I realize AC isn't as necessary.

For light-colored (or reflective) and insulated teardrops, 2500 BTUH should be enough.

Our experience is different with the PetCool. We don't usually camp in the summer, but did so one time with friends that had a pop-up. Daytime temperature was around 100 degrees. Out PetCool was working hard but kept the teardrop around 80 degrees. With nighttime temperature in the mid-80s, the PetCool kept the cabin at 68-70 degrees. The probable reason for the difference is that our PetCool is permanently installed, supply and return lines are insulated, supply and return are separated for "flow through" airflow (supply is at head of the bed; return is at the foot of the bed) and there is an additional inline blower to help the return flow back to the PetCool.

Ours is white with 1.5" EPS insulation and less than 400cubic feet inside 86016 this was before I insulated the hose but it did not help much.
Knowing what I do now I would be willing to bet the 80999 could be done for about $250.

Not very practical and very expensive. Where will you store the two pieces that can't be separated when it's not in use? The umbilical cord looks like it could be easily damaged. Much better off to get a small window unit that only costs about $100 and find a way to install it in the trailer.

I see it offering a lot of flexibility for building in your A/C. You could put it on the front wall, and only have to leave a small passage for the cables to go through if you built it in. Since its slimmer you could also mount it on a side wall and put the compressor somewhere else. It is expensive, but prices will come down if it becomes popular. FWIW, there are 9K BTU units available in the US, but I think they require processional installation

I really like the split mini technology. They are, as a rule, much more efficient than a window shaker and also much quieter. They do cost more though and maybe not the best solution for all problems.

This particular model only runs on 220-240 VAC and since it is European that is also going to be 50 Hz. Without a new motor meant for 60 Hz that would make the European motor run slower, produce more heat, have less cooling air blown through, produce much less HP, which will exacerbate the previous mentioned issues and in the end be toasted. That is unless it was designed to run on variable frequencies and what is the chance of that?

Since "bigger is better" still seems to apply to many things in the USA I have to wonder if there will be smaller mini splits readily available here in the foreseeable future. Even our small homes are large compared to many other European countries.
