California PTI registration

Postby cometgv » Fri May 15, 2015 6:56 pm

After weeks of dread, I finally took the plunge and registered the teardrop at the California DMV. It took a while to get through the waiting line but the time was spent filling out a pack of forms.

When it was my turn,I started trying to explain that I had a homebuilt "camp trailer" and was looking for a PTI. She said she's done these many times and knows exactly what to do. So this is how it went down:

- Fill out forms.
- Show box of receipts, make copies of major ones (chassis, axle, etc). Mainly to show tax was paid on all parts.
- Verbal declaration of weight.
- Agent measured trailer to verify under 14 feet.
- Pay $20 for registration and plate.
- Leave the building.

Total time, not including the wait que was about 20 minutes.

I hope our trailer goes as easy as yours. I haven't had good luck in the past. You must have found a good office to work with. Thanks for sharing.

Try Grass Valley. They say they have plenty of experience, just make sure to take a box of receipts!

If you have AAA, try finding a AAA office near you. I was able to register my trailer there and it was far more pleasant than any experience I've ever had at a DMV.

It was also nice to find out that apparently there's a AAA office less than a mile from my house :D
