Anybody using a Napier Backroadz SUV tent with their TD?

Postby AZKayaker » Tue Jun 09, 2015 12:09 am

I'm looking for a large TD screenroom. I was thinking if buying a TrailVeil, but for a few bucks more, this tent makes more sense to me. It has a floor and some large windows. Anybody using this Napier model?

I don't have one yet, but, I am considering the Cabela's Eagle's Camp 17' x 15' Screenhouse. It looks like it would fit over the tear with enough room to access the side doors and have plenty of room behind to open and work in the galley. Maybe even enough to add a small table and lawn chairs. What I'm hesitating about it is... it's cheap as screen tents go, so, it might be really cheaply made, and, the 17x15 size may be deceptive. I don't know if the slope of the walls would limit room too much.

Yes, works great. Tent very high quality with no leaks even during pretty bad thunderstorm. Kids sleep in tent, high ceiling makes it easy to change clothes.

I bought the napier SUV tent # 82000 a few years back.

It has held up very well. I've used it for over 30 days in very harsh dusty desert camping (well, a certain art festival in northern nevada over labor day). It's also been to all the national parks in the 'great circle'.

I am somewhat lazy with the cleaning, so occasionally (ok, usually) a few weeks or even months go by after a camping trip, when I'll unpack the tent and hose it out.

Even with this lackadaisical care, it has held up wonderfully.

Only the carry bag seems to be made out of non-UV-proof material; after 8 years of ownership it is getting papery and brittle.

EDIT: I don't use a ground tarp, and the floor is still waterproof after many uses

How do yo have that attached so closely on there? Have you had it like that and managed to keep it waterproof without a fly over the connection? We've taken ours out once, got it slightly strapped on the teardrop with the straps going over to the other side, but it's not sealed enough where it would hold up with rain the way we currently have it...

had one o f these for a couple years and never used it (being single and so far never camping in one spot for very long, just never put it up) ended up returning it to Teardrops NW in Salem, Oregon who sold it to me. they gave a refund which I was happy with - Great bunch of people!!! Now I have the Trail-Vail and guess what? - haven't used it yet, either. But one of these days I know I will be being it takes up so much less space when traveling I always take it with me. I still think boot tent is a great tent idea, it just was too big for me, myself, and I, but for a family it would be fine! looked to be a very well made tent.

Straps across the top to the other side and also to the frame of the trailer underneath keep everything tight. Rain fly on main tent but not over the connection to teardrop. I did spray waterproof on the seams for extra protection.

Thanks, we'll work on it a little more. I'm just unsure how to keep the sides of the connection from letting water in. We can wrap the Suv tent around top, bottom, and front of camper with straps, but it seems like that side toward the hatch will not be secured on in any way, and let in water. I know other people have used suction cups or snaps, so I'm surprised your connection has withstood rain without any of that! I'd like to figure out how to make that work too!

Thanks again for your response!

I have one that I bought in 2012. It has been used extensively in cool weather as a hideout and dressing room. It fits tight around the hatch with provided straps but will leak a little water during heavy rains.

I have one, bought it in 2004 shortly before I finished my trailer. Only used a couple times as a standalone tent, my trailer was too wide for the "Boot" to fit around. It's around here somewhere.

I have the Napier Sportz 82000. I have used it for several years mainly early spring late fall to extend our day outside the confines of the TD. It is wonderful. I have a 10X10 heavy mexican blanket for a carpet, table, chairs. I use a Coleman cats eye heater. This tent has a low vent near the floor and one near the top so it vents fumes. I would not sleep in there with the heater on however. We do not cook in our tear/tent to keep food odors out. It is bear protection. I use the Little Guy 10X10 side door room by Paha Que also as needed. Our Little Guy is the 5' wide platform and the collar is plenty wide for it. I see that you are planning to use the tent on your side door. I recommend that you look at the side rooms available from Little Guy. The smaller one is priced about the same as the Napier SUV tent and is designed to fit the side door. I believe it is adaptable to any TD.

Actually, I have a rear entry lift door on my camper and am going to utilize the Backroadz in the same manner that it's used on the pictured SUV. I just bought a display model from Napier on Ebay for $135 with free S&H. They are $221 on Amazon.
