Privacy vestibule

Postby GuitarPhotog » Mon Jul 06, 2015 3:16 pm

A couple of years ago at the DAM Gathering, Gordon Burwell had a privacy vestibule that he made from electrical conduit. He's an electrician so it was a natural. I copied his frame design and clipped a white poly tarp to it for the drape.

The frame

I decided I'd better make some real drapes for it for Brian's Farm Gathering (I don't want to look too "ghetto"), so I found some retro-looking outdoor fabric on sale and went to town.

I used two pieces of 54" wide fabric, one for each half, and sewed velcro tabs on the sides to hold the sides to the vertical poles.

I will still use a poly tarp over the top in the rain, I haven't figured out how to hold a fabric drape to the teardrop without making holes in the skin. But this will improve the looks and make setup easier.

Very nice Chas,
My friends are Notely's Canvas in Chico, Ca and they make great conduit/canvas designs. When I finalize my design I'll let my friends perform it's execution. I like your design in it's lightweight, strong, functional and easy to set up. I am adding a socket to my fender and propane tank holder to hold a vestibule frame.
Bug proof or resistant and it seats how many? When I get the perfect side vestibule I'll consider the rear galley version.
All of the pics and ideas are great. Thanks.
Enjoy, Chris

I like the frame and the fact that the fabric blends with your teardrop; yet, is festive. Good Job, Charles! :applause:

Chas, you may want to consider some sticky back velcro. Or one of the 3m command products. Some are small hooks. You could attach the hook to the side of your trailer with the command adhesive (which will remove with no damage, I sound like a ad on tv), then make a loop with some string and sew or pin it to the curtain, and then hook the loop of string over the hook on the trailer to keep it closed.

Really love this idea! It would be great if you're on asphalt in a parking lot too. Not that that's the ideal place to camp but some places it can't be helped. Thanks for sharing it with us

I think it depends a lot on ones style of sleeping. If one is used to sleeping with very little (or nothing) on, a vestibule would be much kinder to ones camping neighbors' eyes than the trek between the trailer and the tented privy area. (Teehee! We won't ask about your style of sleeping, Chas.)
However, even though I camp-sleep in jammies, if I were sleeping in a teardrop, I'd want a vestibule, too!

The vestibule is more for changing clothes -- dressing/undressing -- rather than as a toilet or shower room. As such I prefer it outside the door, not across the campsite.

When it's raining, and the roof is on, it gives me a place to take off wet rain gear before getting in the trailer, and vice-verse. I found it to be quite handy in this regard when camping on the Oregon coast a couple of years ago when I had eight rainy days out of eleven.

I have a pair of pipe in the roof with pipes that slide into them.
I simple pull the pipes out and hang a pair of shower curtains. very easy and quick.
