In Interior Height, Inches Matter?

Postby Cathy P. » Sat Apr 16, 2016 8:47 am

I know that a couple of foot make a huge difference in a smaller TT, but does the difference between a teardrop that is 38" versus 47" make a noticeable difference inside the teardrop cab? It seems like it would. I have mapped it out on the wall, but have yet been able to decide if interior height should be a major deciding factor. Thanks!

Using the wall measurement , sit on the floor up against the wall. Make a mark at the top of your head on the wall . Add the thickness of your mattress, then add an inch or two for “what for" , and you have the minimum height you need . The only other deciding factor is your claustrophobia level ..

I would say that it is the different between just sitting up and being able to kneel on the bed. If you can kneel it makes moving around a lot easier and gives you some room to hang up some clothes.

Absolutely yes! You may not notice a 2-3" difference but those 9"extra inches of 38" vs 47" is huge, especially when you deduct the height of the mattress. Even for someone as short as me, the difference of something like 38" vs 43" would affect how I maneuver in the camper especially when sharing the space with someone else. Take 43" & subtract the height of the mattress & you're really changing how you might physically move around inside. Adding an extra 4" to get up to 47" & it could make a big psychological difference for many people. This isn't to say that you couldn't be happy with 38" inches, but I personally would like a little more height. (Of course, I'm more of a standy person to begin with so bear that in mind.)

Thanks, everyone! Well, I measured 34" sitting and 46" kneeling, add a 4" mattress/extra bedding and :(

I have noticed that the "stargazer" window is becoming popular and know that can make a difference in "closed" in or not to some extent. I also know that the window most likely to leak is that front window. In the past, have traveled in some bad storms with excessive wind and rain.

OK, I'm

Miss Piggy has 38" above the mattress and it has never been a problem.
So when we started our "Kermit" build and discovered we were going to have an extra in of vertical cabin space, I asked Sandi if she would rather have that inch above the mattress or below in the lower storage compartment (8" deep in Miss Piggy). She opted for the extra inch for storage........so she can take another inch of clothes.
As both of our tears have windows all the way around as they are made from old car bodies, claustrophobia is not a problem for us.

I added 12 inches of height to my design and am so glad I did. Now that it's mostly built, I can sit upright on the side benches with several inches of head room to spare, so I will be able to sit up straight on the mattress as well. I'm 6'3, and the height of the trailer is 5 feet, and it's 4 feet at the benches.

I think even if the extra height is not needed for moving around, the extra volume in the trailer makes for a better sleeping atmosphere, less stuffy.
