Balance your trailer tires?

Postby Cosmo » Thu Apr 28, 2016 3:55 pm

I purchased my trailer about a year ago. I was camping last week and noticed it did not have weights on the wheels. I took the wheels to be balanced and they indeed needed to be balanced. Have you balanced your wheels?

Thanks
Cosmo

yes, and the spare as it is a full size and matches the others. And they were way out also. Since I did it before we really got out and did some major traveling, I can't say if it mattered but in my mind I think it would track better and get better mileage when properly inflated.

No I did not do this yet. I guess I should think about it.

I put a new set of tires on one of my trailers without balancing them and headed out late in the evening for Shasta. Soon realized my error but no tire stores were open and we had to get down the road. Slowly made it about 100 miles(at max 45mph) to a town with a tire store that I knew would be open at eight in the morning. It was torture on both our car and trailer. Actually shook off my license plate!
Moral: Balance your tires.

Believe it or not most tire shops will tell you they do not need to be balanced..........I call Bullship!. Trailer tires go round and round just like and as fast if not faster than your tow vehicle. They need to be balanced.

I forgot to add something. A friend had a tire blow on the way to a gathering. Limped into camp, ordered up a replacement at Discount Tire. Now, they are good in my opinion, did my truck and balanced my trailer tires. BUT I told her to make sure they balanced the tire, well... they charged her for it but not a single weight on it. She drove the trailer back and they balanced it and refunded the money.

I pulled the Marathon ST tires after a number of folks had failures and replaced them with Micheline Harmony. I did have them balanced when thy were mounted.

I tried Googling the Harmony and it appears that it is not made anymore.

I've never balanced the 12" tires that came on my HF and NT trailers and I have put a lot of miles on both of them with no problems. I did balance the tires when I upgraded the Super Bee to 13" passenger car tires.
