Best way to.prevent camper theft.

for my trailer (tiny trailer not teardrop) I am planning an extendable tongue for tight maneuvering. This also allows me to remove the trailer side coupler. Harder to steal if they cant hook up to it.

Well, you could make your trailer look like something that nobody would want to steal and tow it with a rig that nobody would want to steal either. You may have it covered. If it works in Wyoming, it should work in California.

I'm picking up my new trailer soon, and been looking into this also. I found this (and many similar ones) on Amazon that go on the tongue and lock so no one can hock up.

Anyone have any experience with these types of locks?

Bill, I have a similar lock to what you show. It would be easy to cut off with a hand held grinder. Only locks on one side. I've heard that thieves will tow away a trailer just using the safety chains if the coupler is locked. Easier yet is to steal it with a rollback truck, then they don't need the coupler, or even need wheels on the trailer.

Here are two links to youtube demonstrations where some common trailer locks are removed with surprising ease. In my opinion, tongue locks are of little value. I keep one on my trailer for looks. As others here have pointed out elsewhere, theft insurance with special riders is probably the best solution.

This along with the normal long list of reason is why I will never live in a large city. No one ever sees anything (yet they'll stand there and watch the whole thing).

Also in big cities it's harder to use force to stop the crap. No one cares except when you beat the hell out of a criminal, then everyone runs to their defence.

Put a lock on it because likely insurance will require it, and have insurance. Sucks but only thing you can do.

Also you can make an audible alarm, not difficult. Electric air horn will deter asshats quickly. Draws too much attention.

There are creative ways to deal with things. The harder you make it, the less likely it will be a problem as easy pickings is what these guys want. Especially when you use cargo trailers. Those have "steal me" plastered on them.

I like your thinking, as a long as the ball is welded to the jack stand.

You can either chain a wheel underneath to the axle or to the other wheel and hope he doesn’t have a bolt cutter.
Or you can take off one wheel and put it away somewhere(two if you also have a spare)
