How did you mount your Flexiride Torsion Axle ?

Postby irhutch » Sun Aug 18, 2019 7:26 am

Did you bolt or weld the axle flange to the frame or did you use the Flexiride side mount hangers ? My frame is 2x2 3/16 square tubing.

My frame is thin wall 2"x3" and I welded the flexiride hangers to the frame. I tried to place the welds so I could grind them off if I ever needed to replace the axle.

I'm a Dexter Torflex guy but I think if you weld the axle without the hangers you could cook the rubber inside the axle.

What's a Flexride cost now? I'm curious.

If you go with a Dexter Torflex axle you can specify that it be removable as I do.
I don't believe there is any extra charge for this feature.
You can weld or bolt the mounts on the chassis and then use the two large bolts to mount each side of the axle.

As you can see I weld mine on. I first tack the brackets then remove the axle.
Be careful to not build up too much heat from welding as it can flex the chassis some.

Do you let it cool for a bit before running each weld?

Yes, it's so easy to build up too much heat on 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" steel tubing.
It's best to weld maybe an inch on each side then let it cool completely before continuing on.
One of my chassis I had to shim the front and back about 1/4" so my wall dadoes/plows would fit the 3/4" plywood floor with plam on both sides.
I just placed 1/4" plywood pads under my mounting tabs to level it out.
It doesn't affect the overall trailer, just a pain in the butt to shim out.
Who knows if the steel was perfectly straight when I bought it.

That's what I did, I welded half a hanger then did the other side, with 20 minutes or so between welds.

I was looking at the Flexiride side mount hangers, looks like you weld the hangers to your frame then you can bolt up the axle which makes it easy should you need to replace it.

We built two trailers with flexiride full axles
We bolted the axle to the frames on both. Used the standard top mount.
Drilled out an oversize hole in top tube wall to allow fastener head and socket to pass through
The fasteners clamp only the lower tube wall to the axle mount.

Have not bought it yet was researching, I wanted the flexiride because of the adjust-ability of the spindle arm, you can change it in 6 degree increments .

Price depends on which axle and if you add brakes. I think it was $ 349 for a 2K without brakes.

That was one of my thoughts since my tube is 3/16, thin kit would be plenty strong for that, thought of dropping bolts in like that then carefully tacking them in place should I need to ever change the axle, that or drill an access hole in my floor so I could get to the bolt.

Yes, that was a large part of our thinking. We used pretty lightweight 14 gauge tubing, we were worried that we might crush the tube a bit if we bolted across the whole tube. If the tube gets crushed a bit you can end up with the nut getting loose.
