What do you do when it rains?

Postby Yakcraz » Wed Feb 05, 2020 11:28 am

In our larger camper we have a TV, DVD, books, board games, etc. to keep us entertained when the weather turns bad. Usually we aren’t boondocking or somewhere remote when we’re in it either so we can jump in the truck & go bum around whatever town we’re in & have lunch or thrift shop or something. My old teardrop had a small TV but with no cable or satellite hookups & only analog antenna channels, it was kinda useless in some places. Guess we could’ve hooked a DVD player to it, but that’s just more to pack. Cell signal & WiFi for phone & tablets isn’t very reliable sometimes either. So, what’s everyone do for entertainment if you get stuck inside your camper?

as a small camper squaredrop we have 61\2ftwx 8ft Tuff Stuff Awning Room that connects to our left side awning. Whether raining in the summer, or cold weather camping we sit and talk, listen to music, have a few adult beverages, play cards & relax. The awning room connects right up against the trailer were we can enter & take naps. Our square drop has left & right side entry doors. It takes no time for set up or put a way, 15 minutes that includes zipping in the floor or unzipping the floor.

I don’t do a lot of sitting around camp when I am teardropping. I will generally be in the field or on the water.

If the weather were so bad that I curtail those activities and stay in camp, or it is simply raining or snowing when I get back, I always have and put up a 10x10 easy-up. I have the walls for cold and windy conditions but they don’t always get used. I sometimes throw a second easy-up to haul along, generally this is to allow me to have the teardrop under shade in hot weather but it also comes in handy in foul weather.

For our conventional camping, our 15’ trailer has a dvd player, we have cards, books on ereader, etc. not to mention just heading into town. We also always have an easyup, generally setup over the dog pen so they have shade or dry as it happens. Plus the awning on the trailer itself.

I highly recommend an ereader as you can bring your entire library and of course no cell or wifi is needed. I do also have a few movies downloaded from amazon on the ipad for viewing without signal. If we have coverage and there is a baseball game on, we will watch that.

That’s a nice setup!!! Is that a Runaway with some upgrades? I considered one of those but decided to build my own. Still, that’s pretty nice!!! Why are the coolers on tables out of curiosity?

those are cooler stands, not tables. They fold up to 6"x6"x20" in a soft cases. I bought the Runaway Range Runner new last year in 2019, 4 months later it's converted from street to offroad. I remove all of the original suspension: leaf springs, hangers & I installed new 31" 4 leaf springs, larger hangers, Dexter Axle Flip Kit, & shocks, cut off the tongue & fabricated a longer, heavier dia. 2 1\2" tubing w\3\4 length 2 1\2" back bone with diamond plate deck, & 2" hitch receiver w\ articulating offroad coupler. Did all the 12v. electrical & 110, paint work, spray on bedliner, complete interior w\rear storage area, swing out spare tire carrier w\drop down table. My modifications & fabrication work can be seen on American AdventuristForum. I built my 1st Offraod Roof Top Tent Camping Trailer 4 1\2 years ago, built the chassis, paint work, fabrication, electrical & bought a Dinoot M Series Tube Kit. That trailer took 10 month off on to complete with 6 months of research before I started. I sold the trailer last spring. The reason for selling was the wife & I are in our 60's of age & worried one of us were have a fall getting down from the ladder from the roof top tent. Thanks

We use EZ ups. It's hard to tell but it was raining pretty good when I took this pic. I have 2 cheap, sorry "inexpensive", 10'x10' Bass Pro canopies and they've been great. When we need more space in the rain or sun we just mount them side by side and lash them together if it's windy. In a group we've had as many as 4 together.

Aside from some things already mentioned...

...Whittle, split wood, hunker down under a dry tree, take a nap (or six), get such a ridiculous fire roaring that no one cares if they're wet, or just get dressed for the deluge and head out into it.

Shelly found 30 Louis L'Amour novels on sale in a thrift store yesterday, so I suppose my rainy afternoon camping needs are met for a while. If we can find places that trade paperbacks while on the road, we can make the material last all the longer.

we do have an RV which gets used as an apartment on wheels to be located wherever we want to be for a while

when we go "camping" we leave the known/predictable access to electronic signals behind and plan on entertaining ourselves w/ the stuff i grew up w/ while camping(the bridal unit never camped before we were hitched >50 years ago)

as T&S mentioned a supply of hard copy to read(if you travel/camp enuff you'll eventually find yourself in some of the places Lamour writes about ;) )

the bridal unit keeps a supply of x-word puzzle books everywhere we go

if we're going to be in a "wild" area for a few days we set up bird feeders to watch

a camp fire

a LARGE cowboy coffee pot

a canopy for rain a/o sun protection

naps n naps n naps...

don't forget Ivory Soap if you're going to be away from plumb'd faciities

wherever you go there will be weather

sometimes it will be more to your liking than others

rain gear n rubber boots for stomping in wet conditions

comfy lawn chairs for just sitting and soaking up some of what Mother Nature has provided

when "plan A" is derailed we turn to plans B & C or invent a plan D...

P P P P P P

Yeah so we always have the 10x10 easy up over the back half of the TD so we can cook in the rain. If where we are camping has a picnic table we usually pull it under, and often have a small tent that pitches on the side of the easy up to add a dry area to hang out in. Put that on the windward side to keep rain out of the rest of the easy up is a good option too. Put the easy up near the firepit (if available) and you can even add some infrared heat in even some major rain storms. (it might take one heck of a fire, but enough fire will go just fine through the rain)

For entertainment, books, cards, often a laptop or tablet with movies (for the little ones usually) or just sitting watching the fire and drinking bourbon.

If its really miserable out, we may hang out in the TD, and do the above.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

We have board and card games, DVD player, books, our phones if we have a signal. The first time we took out our camper it was too cold to sit out by the campfire. Luckily there wasn't a cell signal. We stayed in and played card games.
