What to do with an M105 rolling trailer frame?

Postby Patrio » Sat Mar 14, 2020 7:41 am

I have a chance to acquire an M105, minus bed, for basically free.

Not a pic of the actual trailer, but a good representation of what I might be getting...i.e., everything not being hoisted in the air.

I've been looking at options. What does it take to get set up to pull one of these with a stock 4x4 vehicle? (Nissan Xterra)

Is it worth my trouble? Would I be better off flipping it and just getting a traditional trailer instead? I'm making a slide-in camping "pod", which I could, in theory at least, mount permanently to the M105. But, I don't want to go through a bunch of headache getting it set up. I know nothing about them.

If I flip it, what's something like that worth?

Here's a thread you might look at to see what's possible for a build. Your trailer might be a tad overbuilt for a simple camper, but it's strong!

Flip it and get ya a right trailer or walk away cause it may never sell.
Too tall and heavy for a build.

I met a guy at a truck show that took the axle out of one of these trailers and replaced it with a Dexter torsion axle. He said it made the trailer much more useable. Torsion axle would make the frame lower too. He had a buyer on the phone for the original axle while I was talking to him.

The M105 is a lot larger and heavier than the M101 or M116, which is what I have. The M105 was designed to be pulled by the M35 deuce army truck, whereas the M116 was for humvees and military pickups (CUCV). The M105 has air brakes, whereas the M101/116 has surge brakes like a boat trailer. If you do get the M105, you’ll need to install electric brakes or figure out some other way of stopping it. I would pass on that and go for a smaller M101, M116, or M416 (the even lighter small trailer designed to be pulled by a Jeep) if you have your heart set on a military trailer platform.
My off-road camper build on an M116A3 military chassis:
