C Channel Frame.

As suggested in a couple earlier posts, I am thinking about using 1 x 2 C channel for my trailer frame. My question is doesn't this pose a challenge for how the hanger brackets for suspension are mounted. From what I have been researching the hanger brackets are wider than 1". Is it okay to weld the hanger brackets to the c channel with overhang on each side? Btw my trailer will have a 3500 lb axle rating. Thanks to all. Great site.

Too weak. Clamp an end of that channel in a vice, grab the other end and attempt to twist it lengthwise. Go ahead, I'll wait...........See? It twists too easily, and the same will happen in your completed frame. Maybe not to the extent of the demonstration, but it will twist, and you're planning a 3500# axle.
Exactly why are you entertaining using that dimension of channel for your frame? (I suspect it's due to that's what's available to you at very low cost or free.)

Sorry to disappoint you, Shirestone, but the realities of physics dictates our plans many more times than we might like.

BTW; You can get a ball coupler for a 2" tube tongue.........just sayin'.

Our 1700# 5x9 uses a "C" channel frame, but it's 4", a bit on the heavy side but very strong. The frame is the foundation on your build. I wouldn't go with less than 2" square X 1/8" wall. This is what we started out with on the frame. It's been modified a bit, but you get the idea...

You left a few things out .how big is you pod .How heavy is it .What axle are you using .How do you plan to use off -road .At one time cars trucks trailers used wood ask Roy. We use on all the rentals we have that get beat up is the Poc-light frame 1/8 wall full axle tork- flex. A over built frame will cost you forever. good to 1200 lbs.

We did 2 x 2 square tube for the main frame but used pretty lightweight 14 guage.
The biggest part of the strength comes from the closed box shape, and next most important is size of box. The wall thickness is important, but only least important.
If you want to skimp on something to save weight or cost, skimp on wall thickness. Much thinner than 14 ga (0.075 inch, or a bit more than 1/16 inch) and it's harder to weld.
14 ga seems plenty strong for us.

For the tongue (A frame) we used 2 x 3 inch tube, same 14 ga. Orient the bigger 3 inch side vertical for most strength in vertical bending, that's what a tongue needs.
