Broken Galley Slam Latch

Postby Minics04 » Tue Jul 07, 2020 6:50 am

Has anyone had a T-Handle Slam Latch break? Allow me to explain:

I use two of these to secure my hatch. I always turn the handle to retract the latch(I don't slam them) to close. This weekend, I went to open the galley and one of the latches would not retract. After fighting with it, I did get the hatch open.

I found a metal piece that must have broken free internally stuck hanging out by the latch.(Pic enclosed)

2nd question: I only secure my galley hatch with two of these latches and I am now concerned with them failing and the hatch opening on the road. Is this just a one off or should I consider using another latching system??

Thanks for any help!!

John

Grease is good!

Perhaps I should try to do the same to my door latches that are similar without having to disassemble them.

We had a problem with the slam latch working itself lose and the galley hatch opening. I installed a couple of Perko marine latches.
