Are they both sleeve bearings? Could affect cost/durability.

Thanks for the question. How do I determine that? There is no technical info on either fan.

My experience with fans is the ones we use in our home and I have yet to find one that is not sleeve bearing, after a couple of years they fail and well time for a new one. I take them apart grease the shaft and they are good for a couple more years. With Compass Rose and the discussion here on how to slow down a Fantastic Fan I decided to substitute two 180mm three speed computer case fans and they work really well. I replaced them last year at 11 years old (still worked). I am going to write Dometic the maker and see what they say. Again my experience is with larger fans and you can tell by the end of the shaft if it is sleeve as there is nothing much other than the end of the shaft. Here is discussion of sleeve vs bearings.

Nice write up!
Its safe to assume the parts are not the best available on both the $40 fan and the $140 fan.
If I am wrong, I could not justify $100 more for a better bearing.

Looking at my use case, the other fans available, price and performance, and how much it will be used, the bearings would not influence my decision to save $100 on a 12V fan, If it fails I will report back

I was unable to get the air flow this fan produces with computer fans. I think the limiting factor was me... Its not the song its the singer!

Thanks for the maintenance tip. I may need it!
