Starter Window - am I asking for trouble?

Postby fliflicker » Sun Sep 13, 2020 12:46 am

I'm building my first teardrop and just purchased a "stargazer window" from vintage technology. It's frameless, (no rubber ring that goes around the glass). Has anyone installed one of these? I'm at the point where I'm thinking about cutting the hole through the ceiling but Im having second thoughts, worrying about leaks. Am I asking for trouble?

I never worked with one, but judging by other threads on this forum, short answer is YES, YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE!!!

See this, for example:

Atomic77 is a really skilled builder, and the fact they gave him problems seems to me a real red flag. Sorry for the bad news, but hope this saves you problems.

but judging by other threads on this forum...

The reason I didn't install one was because of the history. I think Frank at Vintage had these redesigned.

You might call him up –-he's helpful-- and just say, "I've heard these can leak. How can I install it so it won't?"

I'll bet you a beer he tells you the new ones are different. And I do trust the guy.

if you have two thing that flex at different rates .Some thing has too give. Most trailers you take out a lot of support when adding one. how about port windows
Il suffit de le faire
fast, cheap, fiberglass/ foam stressed skin panels

Build 4.5 by 8' using Trailtop fiberglass Components

There are spectacular adhesive+sealant technologies these days

especially relevant are techniques for mounting portlights on the outside of flexing fibreglass sailboats pounded by waves all year long, built to survive big storms offshore, any leakage being A Big Deal.

So, definitely can be done, but best with the right knowledge and materials.

Besides the fixture mechanics and materials science, surface prep and temperature/humidity while curing are often most critical!
