To cover, or not to cover?

Postby Patrio » Mon Oct 26, 2020 11:41 am

It's been quite a while since I started building my Thing... http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=72216

I didn't make a build thread because I'm terribly slow. Maybe when I finish, I'll go back and post the pics from start to finish.

I'm in the home stretch now and I have a question.

There are some overhanging portions on the sides and front. I have PMF on the sides, obviously and underneath. There is a small portion of exposed wood at the bottom of the vertical panel where it joins the side, and I can wrap excess canvas from the top to the underneath and glue it and paint it to cover it. But, part of me thinks I should just cut the canvas off even with the bottom, fill the seam at the joint with something like PL, put a couple coats of paint on it, and call it good?

What I'm thinking is, as it is now, there's nowhere for water to be trapped. I plan on painting this every year, or maybe every couple years at worst, and keeping it stored under a carport most of the time.

It seems like wrapping the edges might make a place for water to rest against the wood underneath if it should get inside. As it is, there's no "trap" for water and if there were any water contact, it would drip right out.

I'm thinking just sealing the seams with PL and putting several coats of paint on it would be a wiser option. Maybe I'm wrong. Any advice is appreciated.

Sense no one in the real know has chimed in. I am of the school, wrap it all. Make it one waterproof shell.

I do see your point, and feel a very thorough sealing with epoxy should work. But I still like the thought of having it sealed 100% by the pmf.

Wrapping the PMF around under the bottom IS a Trap for water , and even the repetitive morning dew can eventually rot that area … ( ask me how I know ) I’ve gone to a simple drip edge where the moisture /water runs PAST the bottom on it’s way to the ground … You can find this in the Foamie section (below).
There’s no place like Foam !
