Passive wall-mounted vent that open/close ?

Postby jongaud » Tue Apr 06, 2021 2:22 pm

I'm planning to install a standard 14x14 fan vent on the roof but also want some vents on the walls for air intake. I know most people crack their windows for this but I would prefer to have non-opening windows.

Finding vents is easy, but either they do not close (they are always open) or they are intented for roof installation (e.g. the mushroom vent).

That's to say: do wall vent that open/close exists ?

Thanks!

* I use metal roof-top vents (intended for enclosed semi-trailers) mounted on my sidewalls, and usually left partially open. They are quite waterproof, and have an inside baffle to keep water out, and there's a butterfly vent closure if you want to seal out dust or airflow (I also put bug screen inside, too). Bought them from etrailer.com. See my post on this thread: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=73034&hilit=+wall+vent#p1267736

Depends on the vent obviously.

Something like: Popup High Profile Roof Vent Air Flow Horse Trailer Box w/Gasket https://www.amazon.com/Aluminum-Popup-Profile-Vent-Trailer/dp/B07DN2SWMM/ref=sr_1_28_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=trailer+air+vent&qid=1617742951&sr=8-28-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE1SVNXSFZPRlRNT04mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNjcxOTYzVFlWUUZKVE5aMUNIJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA1MTYzMDIxMVEwSVVTVVlRSVJXJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== could be mounted on the side and definitely can be opened or closed. This does stick out a bit.

Something like: Half-Moon Side Air Vents https://www.amazon.com/Class-Customs-Cycle-Trailer-Half-Moon/dp/B0887D1XTN/ref=sr_1_51?dchild=1&keywords=trailer+air+vent&qid=1617743001&sr=8-51 are always open, and are reasonably water resistant barring submission or torrential rain. Of course one might be able to create a cover/lid for the inside or use foam to allow air and slow water.

The Maxair 7000K Deluxe https://www.amazon.com/Maxxair-0007000K-MaxxFan-Deluxe-Remote/dp/B003ZOF09Y/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1XG8ONHRO5QYA&dchild=1&keywords=maxair+deluxe+with+remote&qid=1617743214&sprefix=maxair+%2Caps%2C252&sr=8-1 has a permanent hood that allows the fan to be open even in rain. Given the typical rear pointing orientation, it might not suck in too much dust. Other fan vendors have similar hoods.

Generally the issue with always open vents is dust. On the open road - not a big issue. But dirt roads means the dust is allowed in. Not the best thing to happen.

The biggest reason for the vent being open is heat. A closed TD sitting in the sun whether driven or parked will heat up. And will take some time to cool. Not an issue if you have the time; not great if you want a quick nap or changing clothes or rummaging around.

I have two of the the Popup Horse Trailer vents like the ones linked by Scottie and like them a lot. The built in "mesh" holes are a bit large in diameter so I glued in some fiberglass window screen material to keep mosquitos out and they work great. If it is not raining too hard, I can keep the vents cracked when it is raining. I also like the fact that the vents are "two way" vents, i.e., you can open the vent towards the front or rear of the trailer.

G'day All

Used vents like the ones to which Scottie refers. In Australia I used some that were called scupper vents [boatie speak apparently].

Open them when travelling on dusty roads...quite prevalent in the Outback :D The open vent provides a very slight positive pressure that keeps the inside of the tray/trailer dust free.

For a static application, insect mesh over/under the opening would be highly recommended
