Disaster averted

Postby bartek » Mon Oct 25, 2021 2:57 pm

I was pulling my trailer out of the garage the other day and I noticed a weird sound. It turned out it was one of the chains (I didn't clip them, since I only wanted to pull the trailer out to the driveway), but because of it I realized something was off.
Somehow the right side of my hitch came completely undone and was now resting on the muffler.
No bolts or other parts on the ground.

I have no idea what happened, one of the bolts is completely gone, but weldnut (which came with the car) to which it was attached is intact. On the other one, the weldnut was gone as well (but the hole in the frame appears intact, so it's not like it rusted and fell through)...
I suspect that somehow one of the bolts worked itself loose over the years, and then maybe the other one snapped with the weldnut?? Or the weldnut snapped first and then both bolts worked themselves loose... Doesn't make much sense either way.
Also, I'm pretty sure I would have noticed when hooking things up, so it must have happened right there and then.. No idea.

So lucky it didn't happen when hauling on the freeway...

Either way, public service announcement: inspect your hitches folks :)
