Flip out camper

Postby JasenC » Sun Nov 21, 2021 12:03 pm

Anyone seen this, just ran across it on youtube.
I've been thinking about an expandable camper during my design stage, pop up or slide out, but had decided to KISS for my 1st one.
I hadn't though about doing it like this though, he even built a coroplast roofing system. Not so sure about that, but if it works for him.

Can't remember the trick for embedding youtube links.

I posted a few comments about his build in my “unusual designs” thread, with links to all 3 of his videos.

My posts are at at these links:

In case the links don’t take you to the exact spots, home in on them by the post dates:

Read the limited comments I have in the above posts, and be sure to expand and read the comment on Youtube pages.

The major issues I have with his design are the roof, setup and tear down in bad weather, and I would worry a bit about stability when opening in strong wind:

About his roofs, I don’t remember many shots of his tarp top, and dread to think of trying to install it in the wind or rain. I think his panel roof is actually the stuff used for green houses (poly-carbonate ??) as it seems to be clear and cost so much (did he say $400 with the aluminum parts??) Skylights are nice but a see-though roof would be WAY TOO HOT in the sun! Coroplast should be a good bit cheaper but probably needs more support.

If I were to seriously consider building it, I would spend a lot of thought on the roof. It looks like he has a very slight slope, not enough in my opinion. And if I went tarp, I would try to figure some way to insulate it and have it roll out fast and easy in wind/rain.

I always wondered what he did with the mattress etal when he flips the bed over. Also, older folk like me might find the bed a bit too high.

But there are some obvious draws:
lots of room, stand-up area, walk-in door with head room, and a big window for air at the bed.
When folded, not very tall and light weight too! Pretty hard to beat all that! Interesting.

Not the route I'm going on my first one.
Definitely not a foul weather set up.
Although I already have a good rough idea how to do a proper roof. haha
