Has anyone made an egg trailer, like a Scamp?

Postby Frank R » Wed Mar 16, 2022 8:14 am

I see some real creative folks on here.

Has anyone made an egg trailer, like a Scamp, or Casita?

I have done some boat building in the past so I am not intimidated by epoxy and fiberglass.

Has anyone made a mold and glassed it? Links or pictures would be great.

I can't find the link at the moment but I've seen an egg shaped trailer done with cedar strip.

CLC (Chesapeake Light Craft) offers a kit done in stitch and glue plywood.

I have one on the drawing board with a curved roof like a peapod boat and curved sides.

Boat building techniques are perfect for a small camper.

Thanks.

I was wondering if anyone has done a full fiberglass camper. Either multiple layers of fiberglass or a fiberglass over foam sandwich (not a foamie).

If you build one mold you can make both the bottom and top out of it.

That can certainly be done, might be easier to just buy a used Scamp.

LOL
I have done some boat building in the past so I am not intimidated by epoxy and fiberglass. You need to do a hell of a lot more research they're made from polyester and chopper guns. too bad the web is full of b******* about epoxy.
To do a production mold for one of those you probably have 50,000 + into it. for a small producer even one you would use polyester skins Don't buy the epoxy bulshit.
look into structural panels depending on what type of foam you use you might have to glue it with epoxy. but you use polyester skins.
You'll see these flakes post they get epoxy for around $70 a gallon .Well is casting epoxy not what you're supposed to use but then again.
EXPOY is for anything that will absorb water like over wood or paper.

now there's probably hundreds of DIYs out there that have done this . more forgiving than wood

Really, I am asking a question and you begin a reply with LOL? Not very friendly.

I have done my research and I know the commercial producers use polyester resin and chopper guns. They do this for ease of use and cost.

Yes, I know their commercial molds are expensive. I know my mold will not be cheap.

Also, for one offs, a form would be easier than a mold. Like a kayak builder who lays out cedar strips and then glasses the outside, removes the hull, and then glasses the inside.

You are assuming things about my purchase of epoxy that are simply not true. Please don't do that.

I have seen racing boats built of a sandwich of foam and fiberglass (or kevlar, or carbon fiber) and epoxy. Why not a camper shell?

Finding a used camper that is affordable is darn near impossible. Some used ones are selling for new prices. New ones start around $24000. I met a guy last year in Michigan that bought a 1969ish Boler camper for $7000, and he traveled to Manitoba to get it (think about that!). Then he had to fix it up as it was showing its age. He also had to strip the old paint before giving it a new coat. If you think about those prices, building a mold/form is looking better and better.

Here's a cedar strip trailer on this site:https://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=2846

Be sure to check his gallery for more photos. It does show how curved shapes can be incorporated (and I love the boat tail).

This is not the one I'm thinking of which was very egg like.

Back in the day.....

I remember reading a book about building a kevlar canoe. What they did was basically build the hull stripper style except it was stripped with foam instead of cedar. It was sanded fair and the outside was glassed, the hull taken off the forms, then the inside. Wood trim was added last.

So I could see building a wood framework skin-on-frame boat style. Then strip it with say 1/2" foam, fair and glass. Doing the inside would be more difficult; the shell might be too big to flip it and work from the outside. I guess you could crawl inside after removing the frame work, fair it and glass it. Care would have to be taken ensure safe breathing! If your frame had steam bent ribs, you could reinstall those to complete the "boat hull" look.

That might be a way to get the glass-foam-glass composite for rigidity and insulation. Should weigh much less than solid fiberglass too.
