ECO Flow Wave portable AC: Yea or Nay?

Postby JuneBug » Tue May 03, 2022 10:32 am

One of those facebook things that popped up. This looks like it would *potentially* be ideal for a tear drop or tiny camper, but the website doesn't list a price or weight yet. 4,000 BTUs, 8-hour run time.

Might be worth following the website to see the Big Reveal on May 12.

Hmmm. The link seems to be 404. ECO Flow doesn't seem to list any air conditioners.

Worked for me. I'm interested but I predict a price north of $2K.

OK, the link works now. And I bit (signed up with email address).

I'll be curious about the battery power requirements. And is this really air conditioning or (as I suspect) merely a portable swamp cooler?

Okay you talked me into it; I bit too. It looks pretty big, and I don't see any provisions for ducting it. I'll wait and see how the big reveal goes but so far I'm not that excited about it. The invite email sends you to a Facebook group:

I also suspect the latter.

The photo on the website resembles Darth Vader's helmet. :frightened:

It's supposed to be an inverter compressor so it should be a real A/C.

Oh, good grief. Now Jackery is dropping something amazing, or at least they say it's amazing -- could it be hype? -- May 12, 8 pm PDT! That's today! jackery.com/pages/jackery-day

"On this year's Jackery Day, we're launching something incredibly powerful, enhancing your outdoor solar experience TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL." (emphasis mine)

I have a sinking feeling it will be something that will allow people to annoy other people by playing loud music in the remote outdoors until very late at night. Chris Pratt is involved.

Most are okay but some Facebook advertisements are not good. They will use a name of manufacturer on their ad so you think the product is reputable and it isn't. I bought a suitcase from what was listed as LLBean. They even sent me a receipt. However, the receipt listed their name as LLBeanus and it had Oriental characters. That was around Christmas. I still don't have the product and probably never will get it.

So far I'm not impressed with the Flow Wave, it's about the same size and weight as a regular 5000 btuh window shaker but 5 times more expensive. They don't publish the SEER rating for the unit so you can't tell how efficient it is.The battery is expensive compared to a DIY LiFePO4 battery and inverter. I'll wait for some user reviews before I make a final decision but so far its a thumbs down for me. I'd go with a ducted window shaker before I'd buy the Flow Wave.

Isn't this the same scam as the GoFundMe version? They make cutting edge claims, ask for funds up front, and there is no scientific way that they can build what the are claiming.

I think it's a scam. (IMO)

Bottom line for me:

1 BTU = 0.293 watt-hour = 0.0244 A-hr at 12 volts.

At 100% efficiency, a 4000 BTU AC will require 97.6 A-hrs, which then has to be charged back up during the day by solar panels or tow vehicle. (I assume if one had shore power or a generator, they would use that rather than a battery powered AC.)

Is 4000 BTUs the right number to cool a teardrop for an 8 hour sleep? I don't know.

While not AC, taking your ice chest to bed with you (if you can store it inside) will lower the temperature of a 5x8' sleeping cabin about 5 degrees. (I learned quickly not to store the ice chest inside on cool evenings!) However, I find a nice oscillating clip-on fan can help a lot and the ones for trucks use about 1 Amp an hour. Near Lassen National Park, 1 hour at dusk will cool everything down nicely. :)
