Truss head screws

Postby Wrecit » Sat May 21, 2022 12:21 pm

You can find anything on the internet......unless you are me obviously.

I am looking for either #11 or #12 self tapping truss head screws either 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. Have got to all the area stores with no love. Have spent the past 3 hours searching internet but obviously Google hates the way I word it. Anyone got any ideas? And no I don't have any friends with a Fastenal account lol

I need them for the reskin on my ETC. Original screws were #10 and I am thinking since they are 37 years old I should go up to the next size to use the same holes.

My other option is to just use Lowes #8's and make new holes but not liking the idea of swiss cheeseing the framing

If I need a 3-pack of whitey-tighty undies, it's a two-hour drive over a 7,000' mountain pass. It wouldn't be worth looking for those screws in my little one-hardware-store town.

Try McMaster Carr's website.

Found them there tony thanks. 25 for $15 so for the low low price of $3300 I can attach the new skin lol

Anyone got any other ideas to attach frp to steel stud framing on an enclosed trailer because I am about to tow it to the scrap yard after that lol

You might get by with some of the 3M adhesive tape & fewer screws. There are some good glues, tapes & other products for sticking things together. Just make sure the surface prep is done correctly so it will stick.

I usually find better deals on eBay for screws:

eBay Linky

Another eBay Linky

But you gotta poke around a bit to find the good deals.

I had purchased a few packs of these (see attached photo) from amazon. I thought the price was reasonable. I'm sure if you get on amazon and look up the supplier (BCP Fasteners) for these screws they will have a bunch of sizes, if this size is not what you're looking for. I liked them.

Why not rivets ? It's not like you're going to take it apart again.

I considered rivits but the price of closed end are pretty high also. Standard rivits will leak

I'm late to the party but I'll share for future reference. Most lumber yards carry them as well as Fastenal, the big box stores usually only have a small assortment. But as with finding many things these days you can't because of covid, like my work shoes that have been out of my size for 3 weeks now.
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.

I've used Ebay for several bulk purchases of screws and fittings.

Teroson 939 panel bonding adhesive will do it, thats how I assembled my (fiberglassed wood) panels to painted steel. Stuff is unbelievably strong. Similar silane polymers like sika 552 would work as well, but Teroson was strongest in my tests (and the datasheet specs which were apparently accurate). Expensive stuff, bit you only need a few sausages to do a trailer.

Just a follow up update. The "studs" on my trailer are basically heavy duty hat channel so I cheaped out and got standard #8 1/2 inch self tapping truss heads from Lowes and screwed into the other rib of the hat channel. Came out good though have to predrill on the 1/4 box tube structural elements I replaced some of the beams that were crapped out.

Hope to have the exterior complete by next weekend and will be doing a huge update to my build log to bring everyone up to speed.

Call your local specialty fastener shop. They'll likely have what you need.

Or just order them from Tacoma Screw here in the GloriousPacific Northwest.

I ended up going with #8 from Lowes and screwed to the clean side of the hat channel studs. If I went with my original plan of #11 or #12 it would cost me over $200 for just the screws for the skin. It's not really that much in the big picture but going #8 I spent just under $50 (the roof alone is 2 boxeslol)
