I'll be heading to Nevada from Virginia in a few weeks via I40/Rte 66. We did this trip a few years back and this will be a quicker trip but I'm looking for suggestions of things to see along the way - prefer things that are within 30 mins of the route. Also, cheap/free places to bed down for the night would be a good help too. This trip will probably be us tent camping along the way.

Douthat State Park and the surround area is quite nice and a good place to camp for the night. Obviously Shenandoah and the surround areas for camping and hiking. Luray area has some cave tours if you are into that. Charlottesville (Jeffersons Home)
I have done this trip often between Maryland and Nashville where my daughter goes to school. Beautiful drive.
