Leaking Water Jug Spout

Postby Capebuild » Sat Jun 18, 2022 7:25 am

The spout from my 7 gallon Reliance water jug spout is leaking. See photo where it's leaking from...at point of pen. I'm wondering if this is a common occurrence with these spouts (like does anyone else have this occurrence)......or do I just have a faulty spout?

Thanks

John

I've had they types of spouts leak both new and old, its not something you can really fix.
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.

* I previously took two Aquatainers on every trip, then reduced that to one, later. At first, I tried using it in a horizontal position in my galley, but it kept leaking, so I took it out, and now I just use them at home for emergency water supplies when the local supplier has a pump failure (about twice a year, for thirty years now....). I take about forty 16.9oz. bottles of water to camp now, instead, and they will last me for 4-5 days, in lieu of the Aquatainers.

* I was using replacement spouts, bought on Amazon, for when I carried the Aquatainers. I found that they'd crack & leak every year or two, so I bought three replacement sets over the years. Great jugs, lousy spigots!

It should not leak much. We put a Ziploc (with a paper towel in it) around the spout while the hatch is down. If that doesn't fix the issue, the spout needs to be replaced. The spouts do wear out and we've always got an extra one in the tongue box.

Thinking a bit more about it, maybe you can find a push button or flip lever style spigot that will fit your jug or that you could drill out a blank cap and install it into.

John, I had to replace one and found a new one in our grocery store where customers fill their 5 gallon, etc. Jugs.
A pretty inexpensive item.

Thanks all for the replies and help. After a little research it seems these spigots don't last forever and leaking spigots seems to be common. I see REI sells a replacement Reliance spigot. I think we only used the jug on a few camping trips last year so I wouldn't expect it to leak... but so be it. I can try a replacement or build a new one with a ball valve....
Thanks again for the help.

A plastic spigot from the hardware store works great. Screws right into the Reliance lid, secured and leak-free with teflon tape.

Similar to what I got:

Just wanted to confirm that my plastic water spigot hack is the 3/4” size. It’s a tight fit but works.

YES!! WORKS. And thanks to Lauren, I replaced mine. 3/4" spigot. Ordered from ACE Hardware, online. At first I didn't have luck screwing the new spigot onto the Reliance cap. But I saw the starter thread on the new spigot needed a bit of filing. After that it screwed in nicely.... a rather tight fit (did not use teflon tape) but screwed it all the way down into the cap. No leaks from what I can tell.
