Tire Placement and Tongue Weight

Postby Capebuild » Wed Aug 10, 2022 2:28 pm

2 part question, I suppose.
1ST, I received my spare tire today and am trying to figure out where to put it during travel. I was going to put it in the car somewhere but then had this thought to mount it as shown in the pics below. The tire weighs around 36 pounds. My question is because it's not centered but kind of off to the side of the front of the trailer does this seem okay.... safe and all that, being that there's 36 pounds on one side and not the other?

2nd... the other question (or concern) is if I do put the tire in the front it will change my tongue weight, but maybe for the better. Once I put our 2 bikes hanging off the back of the trailer, the tongue weight is at 9%. If I add the tire to the front (with bikes hanging off back), the tongue weight changes to 11%, which is probably more in line with what it should be.

Any thoughts on all this would be helpful, especially about placement of the spare tire.

thanks!
John

1) Given that your tire is on the left side of your trailer and your water jug and cooler are on the right, it seems as though it would improve your balance rather than degrade it.

2) 10% to 15% tongue weight is the commonly recommended range, so it helps you in this regard as well.

I've thought about putting my spare in a similar location but have yet to get around to it. Having to store it in the tow vehicle has been a hindrance that I gripe about each time we load the truck up.

My spare is hung on the rear hitch receiver with a U bolt.
Not the easiest access point but only had one flat since our 2006 TD.
I have blocking I put under the tire to crank it into place.
