R-pod trailer wiring issue. Help

Postby Modstock » Sat Sep 10, 2022 7:10 pm

Helping my aunt get her recently purchased 2009 Rpod trailer hooked up to her 91 chevy truck.
We were wiring up the trucks 7 pin and converting it to the new style when we noticed a ""back-feed"" coming from the trailer harness.
Shouldn't be getting power from the trailer, so we stopped on the truck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Most shops are weeks out.

What exactly do you mean? Articulate the symptoms.

So the body of the truck is charged?
What does the test light connect to?
After you totally disconnect the trailer.
do you still get a light?

With the trailer disconnected from your TV,
Test the same connecter to the trailer frame...

Please report your findings.

It was grounded to the trucks bumper (cleaner steel) but still, shouldn't be getting power.

Been working on the truck all day, sorting out previous owners wire job.
Once we thought the trucks 7 pin was wired correctly, we hooked it up, tested the lights and minutes later a fuse blew, hunted that (hidden) fuse down, replaced it. Went over double checking everything and that's when we noticed power coming from the trailer plug.

While it was hooked up we could hear a circuit breaker clicking under the frame (3 red thick wires connected to it).

Starting to wonder if the battery cables are switched but there's a red and black in according positions.

BTW:::;;;
The trailer harness is untouched factory wiring.

This.

That wire goes to the battery. It's how it gets a charge while towing. It's supposed to be like that.

OK. So I would have to change the ground on the truck to the black location since that's where the white wire is located ???
Crappy pic of the trucks plug.

I also own a B2601, and it's been fantastic for my needs. When it came to finding a trailer, I too had to consider weight limits due to my towing vehicle's capacity. Like you, I didn't see the point in spending a ton of money on a new trailer, especially given the weight restrictions.

Double-check all the ground connections on the trailer and the truck, and ensure they're clean and secure. Also, inspect the wiring for any signs of damage or corrosion. It may work for you. I had a similar problem a while back with my old trailer. It turned out to be a ground connection issue causing the back-feed. But in my case, the only solution was to buy a new trailer. That's when I discovered Boom and Bucket's used equipment offerings. I got a fantastic deal on a used "TrailBlazer XT" model for just $3,500, which was a fraction of the cost of a new one. The quality was surprisingly good, and I've had no issues with it.
