Storing Propane Hose on Outside of Tank

Postby Capebuild » Tue Sep 13, 2022 7:58 am

Any thoughts on keeping the propane hose connected to the propane tank, coiled up as shown in photo, during travel from place to place...... rather than having to connect it-disconnect it every time the stove is needed for use? See any issues that might be problematic?
Thanks.
John

I'd think it would be okay. We always turn off our tank, of course, unless we are using it, as gas might seep out slowly at connections even when they pass the soapy water test.

With our long hose run, we also let the gas out (burn it off or just release it) of the hose before driving. Probably not an issue with that short hose.

I think most leave it hooked up. The only thing that comes to mind is opening the valve slowly when turning it on.

Thanks.
I do shut off gas at the tank when traveling and purge the line.
Now that we’ve used the trailer a bit I can see I wish I had
fed the gas line through the trailer’s side and had stove’s inlet
on other side so I could leave the line always hooked up.
Thanks again. Having gas line stay on tank will save a step
when hooking up.

I would be concerned about theft when on the road, at a rest stop, gas fill-up or overnight park. Best case would be to have it in the tongue box & ready for use when necessary.

Knock on wood, mine has been hooked up on the tongue, not sheltered, for 11 years. (However, mine is not the normal attachment system and might have a thief scratching his head!) The only problem I had was with a kid (or someone) who turned the gas back on. So now, I try to always double check before I drive, even if I've already been on the road a while.

I'm thinking it would be nice to have a "dummy" plug to put on the tag end (FME = Foriegn Material Exclusion). If there isn't one available commercially you could likely 3D print one. In a pinch, a plastic sandwich or quart freezer bag rubber banded on could work, but might tend to trap moisture and debris in the excess portions of the bag. Either that or blip the main valve a tad to blow the line out before reconnecting. Wouldn't want road debris being blown into your appliances.

How soon we forgot about the exploding Ford Pinto when rear ended.
I store our 2 propane tanks in the tongue box, safe from theft and tailgaters, etc.
I store the hose under the roll out stove/oven.

John, i realize many never have issues HOWEVER there is no way to absolutely keep that quick connector clean and free of dirt particles based on the picture in the OP

your hose assembly doesn't require a tool to attach or remove SAFELY

i would not only remove the hose i would also use one of those plastique screw in/on caps(on a short chain w/ a swivel on it to leave it hooked to the handle loops on the tank) for the tank valve for the same cleanliness reason

hooking up is only a factor of a coupla minutes at the very most and realistically less than one minute

if you are in that big of a hurry then camping might not be your best bet ...

i'm betting you can find a safe location for the hose to ride while traveling that is within actual reach from the tank once the hatch is opened(we threw a towel in the SS bowl we used for a sink that our hose rode in)

just an old man's 2› worth this evening

I didn't forget my Mom had a vega! And I still plan to put mine where you are.

Something to think about, it's closer to my back window :o

I use a quick connect between the tank and the regulator and keep the hose attached to the grill. If you do that make sure you use a quick connect designed for LP.
