Any recommendations for affordable or free accommodations fo

Postby JermaineRoberts » Wed Jan 31, 2024 2:13 am

In a few weeks, I will be embarking on a journey from Virginia to Nevada, following the I40/Rte 66 route. Although I have taken this trip before, this time it will be a quicker journey. I am seeking suggestions for interesting attractions and landmarks located within a 30-minute drive from the route. Additionally, any recommendations for affordable or free accommodations for tent camping overnight would be greatly appreciated.

Keep driving on I-40 through Albuquerque! Don't stop. Crime rate, including stolen trailers, is high.

On the East side of Albuquerque, however, there are some nice areas. See:

However, in a few weeks, ie: February, it may still be a bit cold and bitter, as we're at a fairly high elevation. For that matter, keep a weather eye out all along the New Mexico/Arizona stretch, as this whole region is high up. At that time of year, it's a real crap shoot! (Past few days it was partly sunny and in the 50's--good enough for a picnic lunch; Friday we are expecting another storm with highs barely above freezing.)

That said, the Painted Desert in Arizona is well worth a stop, and is at fairly low elevation. Meteor Crater may be of interest. Flagstaff can be nice, but again, is back up in elevation and can get traffic stopping snow when the desert on either side is getting rain.

Grand Canyon is close, but a little more than 30 minutes from I-40.
