A/C on tongue...

Postby mikeschn » Sun Aug 29, 2004 4:45 pm

I picked up another air conditioner on the way home today. It's the entry level 5200 Goldstar A/C that weighs 44 pounds.

I set it on the front shelf so that I could weigh the tongue...

Image

If you recall from previous messages, the tongue weight had climbed from 65# up to 74#. Now with the A/C setting there the tongue is 116#.

My first thought is, that's too heavy. My target is 100# for the tongue. So it's back to the drawing board...

Mike,

Have you accounted for loading in the rear of the trailer that will offset the a/c in the front?

How about making the a/c removable so that you can slide it in once you get to the desitnation?

I guess I'm glad I don't have to worry about A/C out here.

Nick.

Yes, I could make it removable. That's what I've been telling Michelle. The A/C will ride in the back seat of the Jetta. So if we are headed to FL we'll have the A/C, but if we are headed to the North Pole, we can leave the A/C at home.

And if I can't come up with anything else, that's what I'll do. But I am going to think about the A/C some more...

My current train of thought is... put it on top. Make it look like a roof mount A/C. Roof mount A/C's cost hundreds of dollars... between $500 and $750 comes to mind... but I could stick a window a/c on the roof for a fraction of the cost, and gain a little headroom right in front of the a/c to boot!

As far as cabin mounted, Cary has got the hot setup.
I like the engled did his, by mounting it under the trailer, when he needed it.

Yes, Cary has the hot setup...

I've evaluated many different locations for the a/c. I keep coming back to the middle of the cabin cabinet, above the axle. Air flow is my major problem. I don't know what's enough...

I've talked to Michelle and we are going to reassemble the mockup, and try out a couple locations for the a/c.

Of course we'll take some photos and keep you posted!

Well,
The middle of the cabin, above the axle, kinda puts you in the location of doing that trick looking vent like Cary's.

Hey, what's your take on engled's method?

engeld? Too messy. You have to tear your a/c to shreads, and every time you want to use it you have to reassemble it. I'm exagerating of course, but no, I would not want to do it that way...

Hey JiminSav,

Because the A/c is only 6" x 6" x 3" deep it cost a whopping $449.

Oh wait, I must be thinking about the furnace... The 12" x 15" x 18" a/c cost about $100 or so... It this dadburn high priced area I live in. :(

It weighs 44 pounds, and it'll have to go above the axle, some how, some way... or some weigh!!!

welllllllllll..if you draw a straight line up from your axle, would it not intersect with the top shelf or whatever you have on the inside part of your galley wall?

I was wondering how you get rid of the condensation? Around where I live if you run a window AC unit you have to angle the back down so the Condensation drains. If it drains and it is mounted in a TD...

Yep, it would intersect both shelves... my biggest dilema is air flow, in particular intake airflow. Can't seem to get enough intake air in all my arrangements.

And secondly, I don't want the exhaust to "cook" to person working in the gallery...

How about a 2nd vent, over the AC unit's tunnel? Use the JC Whipme motorized model... push a button and it opens. :D
